Coleman's database: lots and lots of Jewish names

by: Joe Bodell

Mon Mar 16, 2009 at 19:22:01 PM CDT

I couldn't resist: I poked into Norm Coleman's supporter database, made publicly available by the Coleman campaign itself and subsequently provided for public consumption by Wikileaks.org.

I'm not going to provide the database, or any links deeper than to Wikileaks' homepage, from which you can confirm what I found on your own. But the disclaimers aside, the headline says it all.

Campaigns are required to track the source of records like these -- since they buy, lease, and otherwise borrow lists from various organizations, it's important (and legally required) to note where you got a given name from. Most campaign databases will include a column called "Source" or something similar to denote this piece of information.

And Coleman's database includes just such a column. One of the codes in that column is "gopjew_091307" -- and there are over 20,000 of them.

Coleman is Jewish, as is his Democratic opponent Al Franken.  But of 50,000 names in the database, over 20,000 from a single list, brought to the campaign September 13th, 2007?

There are a couple of possible connections here -- On September 20th of that year, Coleman sponsored a Sense of the Senate resolution that said "that the U.S. should 'combat, contain, and roll back' Iran's 'violent activities and destabilizing influence inside Iraq."

Earlier this year, after he was shuffled out of the Senate once his term officially expired, Coleman accepted a role with the Republican Jewish Coalition, which very well could be the source of the "gopjew_091307" source list in the first place. There's no way to know for sure.

But 40% of a supporter database from a single source in the American Jewish political lobby could make for a very powerful special interest arrangement for a former Senator. Whatever organization it was that leased, sold, or gave its list to the Coleman campaign, they're more than entitled to their views and their advocacy efforts. I don't expect the RJC to give Al Franken their list any time soon.

But it's worth asking, if it was the RJC, whether the provision of their supporter list was a leading indicator of Coleman's support for their agenda, or a trailing one -- and what part it played in their later hiring of the former Senator for a job about which we still don't know much.

From the source (who makes it blindingly obvious that no "hacking" was involved).

SmartPolitics Looks At The DataLeak Donor List

by: TwoPuttTommy

Fri Mar 13, 2009 at 09:38:06 AM CDT

The fine folk over at Smart Politics has taken a look at Norm "Smokescreen" Coleman's downloaded donor list, and now has two posts on the subject.

Yesterday, they looked at where the donors came from, and today they look at the list's occupational profile.

From yesterday's breakdown, I note that of the 4,715 donors on the list, only 1837 are from Minnesota - about 39%.  Of the dough scammed collected by Team Smokescreen, about 31% came from Minnesota.

Link here to go look at yesterday's whole story.

In today's post, they look at the occupational profile of the donors.

Link here to go look at today's story.

And don't forget to check out Smart Politics regularly; the link is provided in the Blog Roll, in the "Local Academics/Think Tanks" tab.

In which Norm Coleman's legal team says ridiculous things...

by: Joe Bodell

Thu Mar 12, 2009 at 18:04:14 PM CDT

Never to be confused with the type of people who let a bad story just go away, Norm Coleman's legal team is at it again with some absolutely preposterous statements about their continuing failure to observe the law and properly secure their donors' personal data. The really tasty bits:
Q:  Wasn't this information accessed in January?
A:  We had reason to believe that someone had illegally accessed our website in late January.  At that time we immediately notified the Secret Service.  They conducted an initial forensics review of our server and concluded that there was no evidence that any private or confidential information had been downloaded.

Q:  If it wasn't accessed from your server, then where did they get the information?
A:  We are not sure.  However, after we notified federal authorities last evening, they are reviewing the forensics search of that server and conducting other investigations at this time to get to the bottom of this matter.

...

Q:  How did this even happen?
A:  We do not know how this happened.

...

Q:  Who is the group responsible for sending out these emails?
A:  To the best of our knowledge, this is an organization that prides itself on posting stolen and hacked information on its website.  What their goals and objectives may be, we do not know.  However, based upon its public statements they are clearly interested in influencing the outcome of the current election contest for the United States Senate.

Q:  Why weren't donors informed of this breach sooner?
A:  When we became suspicious that this information may have been breached in January, we contacted the appropriate federal authorities.  They went into action immediately, and did a search of the affected server where this information was allegedly taken from.  At that time, they did not identify any evidence that showed this information had been accessed, or that any private information or data had been compromised.

Come on, guys. Of course you know how it happened -- whoever your tech team was left your confidential donor database, containing information you were not supposed to record, in a publicly accessible location on your web server for the whole world to see.

We could continue, but let's review the tape after the break with Wikileaks.org, the organization whose stated mission is "We help you safely get the truth out."
