Tax the Rich Does Happen

Last week sucked, and pulling off SD26 yesterday would have been nice, but here is some choice news.  Yesterday, Oregon voters approved tax increases on top earners and corporations.

The article includes a quote to the effect that voters have 'switched their minds' in going after the rich.  That is inaccurate.  Higher taxes on those who benefit most from the services government provides - yes, that means the rich man, however much his butt-licking dogs, like TPaw, whine otherwise - have always been politically popular.

In Minnesota, of course, moving toward the appropriate fixes can begin in pretty straightforward fashion:  elect a Democratic governor.

Mark Dayton: Taking On Tax Fairness

by: Grace Kelly

Tue Apr 21, 2009 at 22:02:33 PM CDT

Mark Dayton was already successfully a US Senator, elected in a year when people would have given any Democratic candidate long odds. Yet he captured the hearts of Minnesotans and won enough votes. It is true that his opponent, Rod Grams, was very poor on constituent service. Yet the many foibles of Norm Coleman did not make Norm Coleman an easy candidate to defeat. Yet still political opponents tend to discount Mark Dayton.

Mark Dayton listens more than any other candidate. He wears his heart on his sleeve, you can see that he cares. He obviously is an introvert. Yet it is hard to spend any time around him and not trust him. How many politicians can you say that about?  I trust him because I read online his many speeches on the war, when taking a peace stance was not popular.

On the issues, Mark Dayton is golden with well stated Democratic views. In fact, he has traction on the tax fairness issue, for he is rich.  So when Mark Dayton is talking about the top 10% of earners paying their fair share, he leads and has high credibility.

One of the reasons, that Mark Dayton is so trustworthy is that he spent his own money on the campaign, so he was beholden to no other interests other than the voters. This campaign, he says that he needs to raise money. One of the greatest reasons to have money is to spend it the way you want. I think it would be a great use of money to fund ones own campaign. For me, it would be way better than those expensive yachts.

For every candidate, I try to ask a different surprise question. For Mark Dayton, I asked what his favorite political hero in history? His answer about Robert Kennedy is incredible and totally sincere. We had to pause the interview, so people in the room could cheer! I thought that his critique of Pawlenty's fatal flaw is the best yet!

Warning: Many videos after the fold!

Pawlenty Ensures the Minnesota Rich Do Not Pay Their Fair Share

by: Grace Kelly

Wed Dec 10, 2008 at 21:03:31 PM CST

Tax fairness is where people pay more taxes on each dollar of income as their income increases. However, in our state, basically the poor pay the most on a dollar earned and the rich pay the least on a dollar earned. So the quickest fix to our economic woes would be to be have the richest top 10% of our population pay the same as the poorest 10% percent of our population.

Total Household Income for richest * difference in tax rate
$74,923,747 * (19.3% - 10.8%) = $6.4 billion potential income
Compare that to the project deficit = $5.27 billion deficit

The blatant tax unfairness is well documented in the Minnesota Tax Incidence Studies:

The WSJ ignores reality

by: Populista

Wed Jun 06, 2007 at 13:17:02 PM CDT

We'll as I looked around the Star Tribune's website today I noticed a huge lie sitting in the Shortcuts section. What is this lie? The conservative Wall Street Journal rushing to crown Tim Pawlenty hero of the middle class. Of course we know better.

Here is the bogus quote that from an editorial that appeared Tuesday in the Wall Street Journal.

"If he's looking for tips on handling Nancy Pelosi, President Bush might want to consult Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota. The Republican Governor is using his veto power to good effect on policy and making himself more popular. Last month the Democrats who run the Legislature in St. Paul pushed through a big tax and spending increase in their $35 billion state budget. Last week Mr. Pawlenty responded by vetoing all six of the spending and tax bills the Democrats sent him. The usual media and interest group suspects are upset, but Mr. Pawlenty is rallying his own supporters and making himself a defender of the taxpaying middle class."

More Inside.
