My Two Least Favorite Days Of The Year...

by: TwoPuttTommy

...are:  "Property Taxes Payable - 1st Half" and "Property Taxes Payable - 2nd Half".

And yesterday was one of those two least favorite days of the year.  I don't escrow, so twice a year I see - and feel the pain - of Gov. T-Bag's "stewardship" of the great state of Minnesota.  In 2001, I paid $2,316 in property taxes; as a result of the Property Tax Reform Bill enacted in 2001, and signed by then-Gov. Jesse Ventura, I paid $1,845.  Under now-Gov. T-Bag, I paid $3,451 in property taxes this year.

The State House Research Department prepared an eleven page slide show in January of 2007 explaining what the 2001 Property Tax Reform Bill was supposed to accomplish; it's available here.

According to the House Research Department, the goals of that 2001 Reform were:

Realign the state-local fiscal relationship:

• • Increase state's role in funding state priorities (education, courts, transit)

• • Decrease state's role in financing municipal services to give residents more direct responsibility for municipal service decisions

The bottom line, is Gov T-Bag accomplished the latter, while ignoring the former.  While researching this post, I noted that MN2020.org has a new report out; published just this morning by Jeff Van Wychen.  From it:

Since 2002, Minnesota property taxes, in general, and homeowner property taxes, in particular, have increased rapidly.  The cause of the statewide growth in property taxes is not growth in local government budgets. These property tax hikes are the result of state policies that require more public costs to be borne by property taxpayers and a larger share of total property taxes to be borne by homeowners.

Yep - since 2002, my property taxes have increased rapidly; from $1,845 in 2002 to $3,451 in 2009 - dam near doubling during the reign of T-Bag The Terrible (a/k/a, "Worst. Governor.  EVER.").

Jesse Out, Barkley In

by: Jeff Fecke

Tue Jul 15, 2008 at 01:21:13 AM CDT

If a former governor won't run against Norm Coleman and Al Franken, a former senator will have to do.

With former Gov. Jesse Ventura, IP-Minn., ruling out a run for Senate, former Sen. Dean Barkley, IP-Minn., will seek the Independence Party endorsement to run against Sen. Norm Coleman, R-Minn., and DFL challenger Al Franken. In an interview with MinnPost, Barkley said, "I'm not Jesse, but I have the same passion."

BREAKING: Ventura Won't Run

by: Jeff Fecke

Mon Jul 14, 2008 at 20:20:20 PM CDT

Well, knock me over with a feather: Jesse Ventura is staying out of the Senate race, telling Larry King that he will not endorse and "may not even vote" for either Coleman or Franken.

This leaves the race where it was for months before Ventura poked his head up; Coleman and Franken, mano a mano for the win, unless Priscilla Lord Faris can pull off an unbelievable upset.

ABC: Ventura (not yet) to run for Senate

by: Joe Bodell

Wed Jul 09, 2008 at 09:00:00 AM CDT

Oy.

This race just got more complex.

Analysis later.

Update: Zack thinks ABC's Tapper may be jumping the gun a bit, since the interview doesn't include an official "I am running for U.S. Senate in 2008 against Norm Coleman and Al Franken."

Update x2: Ventura says Tapper got it wrong....

Not This Time

ventura.jpgThose of you who have been reading my blog since 2002 (a group that includes...well, me, I think) may remember that I have a soft spot in my heart for former Gov. Jesse Ventura, IP-Minn. Oh, Ventura turned out to be a mediocre governor at best, and certainly too thin-skinned for the rough-and-tumble world of politics. But for a brief shining moment in 1998, he managed to serve as a living rebuke of both major parties in this state, a rebuke the DFL responded to by not changing a damn thing about how they operate, while the GOP at least sorta pretended to care.

While Ventura was a mediocre governor, he was light years better than Gov. Timmy, and I still believe he was better than either former Attorney General Hubert H. "Skip" Humphrey or now-Sen. Norm Coleman would have been. Skip ran a half-hearted campaign that suggested he was owed the Governor's Mansion by dint of his family name, while Norm campaigned on hockey and carpetbagging. Ventura was an imperfect vessel, but he was right when he told Minnesotans that the two major candidates were out of touch and full of crap.
