MN-02: Dan Powers is sick of politicians like John Kline

by: The Big E

Thu Jan 21, 2010 at 15:05:29 PM CST

Dan Powers wants your support to become the DFL candidate to face Rep. John Kline in the MN-02 race.  Powers is a small business owner who has become sick of politicians who don't listen.  Kline is one of those politicians who doesn't have to listen because he's easily won reelection year after year.

Powers is building a grassroots campaign based upon healthcare reform, building a green economy and fiscal responsibility.  He's started by hiring Mary Breitenstein ("MaryB"), a veteran of countless campaigns including Franken, and told me he will soon have a Finance Director.

"The deal is that I was a project manager for construction companies," Powers told me.  "My job with those companies, and then running my own, was to listen and do what's best for the customer."  An attitude like this would be drastically different than the rude and indifferent Kline.  Read more about Power's background here

Powers supports a public option, wants to lure companies to build wind turbines and solar panels in his district and work hard for the people of his district.  In contrast, Kline always toes the Republican party line.

Kline's main campaign theme is to ban "pork."  Pork is earmarks.  Earmarks are federal money to build local projects.  Kline has repeatedly stated that fixing earmarks is his top priority.  Kline neglects to mention that earmarks are less then 0.5% of the federal budget.

"I think that fixing the bridge in Hastings is really important," Powers said.  "What Kline is doing is raising taxes locally because he won't work hard for his district.  Somebody's got to pay for this so we don't have another bridge fall down.  Since Kline won't even try to help, local taxpayers foot more of the bill."

About Entenza: What is the question we should be asking?

by: Christine Rose

Tue Jan 19, 2010 at 10:57:34 AM CST

Before we ask ourselves who should be the next governor, we need to ask ourselves what questions we should be asking to make that decision. Do we ask ourselves: "Who do I like? Who represents my hopes?  Who can I relate to? Who is best for me?" Yes, maybe we can do that.  Or maybe, just maybe we can ask "Which candidate is the best candidate for the most people?"

Without a doubt, I would have to say that candidate would be Entenza because he comes with a disposition and political history that sees the dignity, value, and worthiness of all people- be it the GLBT communities, racial and ethnic minority groups, the employed, the unemployed, the youth, the elderly, the poor, the forgotten, and the unwanted.

He is a listener, and a deep thinker. It means a lot to me that he initiated the Minnesota 20/20 think tank group to ascertain and focus on the issues that are of greatest concern to all of us, and has used that knowledge to formulate policy, legislation, and strategy to develop plans and realistic goals to rebuild this state so that all of us, in whatever corner of the state we reside in, can begin to hope that the future will be better, and that we each carry a dignity no matter who we are, how we were made, and how much we have in our pocket. This is a candidate who sends a message that we all matter. We are all equal and deserving of fairness, safety, healthcare, good educations, good opportunities and we are all welcomed participants in a stronger and healthier Minnesota.

While many candidates are talking about the need for better healthcare, better schools, more jobs, and more opportunities, Entenza is the only candidate who has bridged these hopes with a sound economic plan that will allow us to realize these hopes. We can talk all day about what's wrong with Minnesota, and what needs to be fixed, who is responsible for breaking it, and how hard it is to be living like this, but talk won't change things. If we want a better future, we need a strong economy, and our government needs to rebuild a strong tax base to support our values and our goals for better schools, healthcare, and opportunities.

Entenza has well-developed plans for a new clean energy economy that has the ability to translate into immediate action through policy and initiatives that can take place when he takes office. He's not talking about pipe dreams ten years down the line. He's talking about what can happen now.  His strategy will have short-term and intermediate steps to a recovery that will build a stronger and more stable Minnesota economy that can support his vision that we all matter, that we are all welcomed to share in the benefits of a better Minnesota, and that we can do this together.

We can do this together by collectively saying "Yes" to hope. When our friends and neighbors are biting their nails about the economy and joblessness, or when our siblings or parents are worried about how they are going to deal with their health issues, or when our children are worried if they can afford to stay in college, or whatever conversation or encounter that you have that begins to pry open yet another dialogue with despair, send them a link to Entenza's website, and talk to them about what you have read, and do your part to spread the word that our time is now, and that our vote and support for this exceptional candidate really truly matters more than ever.

Working for a Clean Energy Future for Our State and Country

by: Katie Gulley

Mon Nov 23, 2009 at 14:17:28 PM CST

(This is great stuff.  I really like the Blue Green Alliance and they could very likely play a huge part in getting the green tech revolution rolling. - promoted by The Big E)

I'm Katie Gulley, a Regional Program Manager of the Blue Green Alliance's Labor Climate Project in Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri and Kansas and I'm starting this diary to help raise the profile of clean energy in the progressive community in Minnesota.  While Minnesota has been a leader for a long time on clean, renewable energy policy, it's time the rest of our country starts to focus on clean energy to create jobs, cut global warming emissions, and increase our energy independence.

Recently, Blue Green Alliance, a national, strategic partnership between labor unions and environmental organizations dedicated to expanding the number and quality of jobs in the green economy, released a report (PDF) in Minnesota that shows a national Renewable Electricity Standard of 25 percent by 2025 and other common sense measures can create over 18,000 manufacturing jobs in Minnesota.  Manufacturing has been one of the hardest hit sectors of our economy, and we continue to struggle to create good paying manufacturing jobs.  Clean energy, in the form of wind, solar, biomass, and geothermal, can create millions of jobs in America and tens of thousands in Minnesota.

The U.S. Senate is considering clean energy legislation right now, and our Senators Klobuchar and Franken are going to be vital to getting a strong bill passed.  I'll be dropping by to let you know what's going on with the bill and how you can help.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and if you want to learn more about BGA, visit our website at www.bluegreenalliance.org.

A Bright Idea!

by: Steve Kelley for Governor

Thu Jul 02, 2009 at 00:23:11 AM CDT

The time has come for Minnesotans to use innovation to reduce our independence on fossil fuels.  However, we must at the same time be leading the nation in the development of green jobs and the green economy.  We have a moral obligation to leave future generations a clean, sustainable environment.

Minnesota Electricians Harness Renewable Energy

by: TheElectricalWorker

Fri Mar 20, 2009 at 12:39:52 PM CDT

(We hope to see plenty more from the IBEW and all our allies in the labor movement here at MPP - promoted by Joe Bodell)

Darryl Thayer, a member of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 292 in Minneapolis, hardly received a visionary's welcome when he addressed the Minnesota legislature in 1968 about the need to develop solar energy and wean the state from fossil fuel-based sources. Worse yet, says Thayer, many of his fellow workers "thought I was nuts."

"GULP..." aka Opening Day at the State Capitol

by: Jeremy Kalin

Tue Jan 06, 2009 at 10:26:01 AM CST

It's swearing-in day for the Minnesota House - opening day of the 86th Legislature in our state's history. Today is magical, for sure. In the marble halls and under the gold-leafed quadriga, 134 of us will answer the call of our names, and be inscribed in the book of history (literally). We'll then raise our right hands and swear to uphold the Constitution. It's a day for humility and celebration, both, and even more exciting for my 22 colleagues celebrating their first day (Rep. Greg Davids, the 23rd "freshman" is returning after one term away).

But, the mood around the Capitol the past few weeks has been sober - to say the least. We all face a daunting task - resolving a $4.8 Billion projected deficit for the 2010-11 state budget. I believe by the time the new economic forecast is released in February, that deficit will worsen, to somewhere between 6 and 7 billion dollars, almost 20% of our state budget.

My own perspective is a little more optimistic than most, it seems...
