Dear University Of Minnesota Employees: You're Next. Sincerely, MNGOP

In their continuing quest to protect their Boardroom Base at the expense of everyone else in the entire state, GOPer State Senator Paul Gazelka from Brainerd introduced what was handed to him Senate File 812, which seeks to cut the pay of everybody - and I mean EVERYBODY that receives a state paycheck.   Here's how the bill starts (thumbnail of Section 1 to the right; full photo below the fold):

The salaries of all employees in the executive branch, the judicial branch, and the legislative branch are decreased by six percent. The salaries of the governor and all constitutional officers, legislators, and judges, except as prohibited by the Minnesota Constitution, article section 5, are decreased by six percent.

And GOPers WOULD whack every State Employee's pay, including employees of the University of Minnesota - except apparently, they  can't.  Presumably, if they could, they would - otherwise, why would they just "encourage" #UMN to do so?  Here's the last line in Section 1:

The University of Minnesota is strongly encouraged to comply with this section as if it were subject to it.

Today, GOPers are "encouraging" all #UMN employees take a hit; down the road, if they can figure out a way, it's safe to assume they'll enforce the hit.

Why are Government Employees on the GOPer's hit list?  IMNSHO, it's this:  today's GOP refuses to raise income taxes on the wealthiest Minnesotans - their Boardroom Base. The GOP's Boardroom Base does NOT pay the same effective tax rate as the rest of us do - and to the GOP, that's just swell.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again:  today's GOP is protecting their Boardroom Base at the expense of everyone.  Well, at the expense of everyone they can...

And if they figure out how,  #UMN employees are next on the GOP hit parade.

Well, Tommy there's another consideration (0.00 / 0)
that ought to be gettin' more of a sniff test from the press, pundits and bloggers: the elected Bible wavers and verse reciters (re-enactors really) among us.   Doug Grow, over at MinnPost talked to one of them, Rep. Greg Davids, head of the House Taxes Committee.  Mr. Davids  witnessed first hand the large and loud rotunda demonstrations at the Capitol that were mounted by organized government workers and allies (who of course are out neighbors).

Here's the link:
http://www.minnpost.com/storie...

But here's what Mr. Grow tapped on his keyboard to conclude his article about the probabilities of a Dayton/Republican compromise:

Davids is a rare Republican. He doesn't always speak in lockstep with his caucus. He said he, too, is perplexed by the number of bills that are being processed that seem to provoke union anger.

"A waste of time," he said of those bills. "He [the governor] is just going to veto them."

Instead of working on such bills, Davids said Republicans should be focused entirely on bottom-line budget issues.

"That's going to be difficult enough," he said.

But then he went back to some of the union chants, especially "tax the rich."

He started talking about the Bible and then the Ten Commandments. He said he recently met with union leaders and suggested to them that "tax the rich" runs roughshod over the 10th  Commandment.

"Thou shalt not covet," he said. "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, or his donkey or his job or his house in the Hamptons. That's what it means to me."

How does this end well?

Rep. Davids is not channeling or paying homage to Jon Stewart on The Daily Show, he's being himself.

God save us from these people.

It is interesting (0.00 / 0)

that a conservative Christian member of the legislature can discern what a poor political move these bills are, but the senior GOP caucus leadership can't.

Let them die at the end of the veto pen, and energize our base in the process.
