On Fox9 News tonight to discuss Wisconsin union-busting

by: Joe Bodell

Thu Mar 10, 2011 at 17:38:01 PM CST

I'll be on Fox9 News at 9 tonight to discuss the union-busting bill just passed in Wisconsin and its political repercussions, along with former Republican Party Executive Director Ben Golnick. We should be on sometime toward the end of the broadcast, around 9:45 tonight -- watch for us, it should be a great discussion.

Check in here with thoughts and comments afterward -- I know I will :)

Please take this as constructive criticism.

You looked just a bit unprepared. At least at the start.
You assumed that the viewers were to informed.
You didn't seem to think about what they would say only what you would say.

Going first is the chance to frame the debate. Normally you will get a pretty broad first question. You have to use that to make your main points and counter their talking points. This is a power grab, this was manufactured so as to make this power grab, I would add that the latest maneuver showed that they were lying all along. Choosing to add detail to those points or waiting to counter is up to you and what you do best. I would tend to add a little detail to your most important point. Like this is a budget repair bill needed because of the tax cuts he enacted earlier.

But you should know the talking points you will be hit with and have rehearsed the counters and either counter first or make sure you counter as soon as possible. Unfortunately he seemed to pack most of his stuff at the end. A reason I like the counter first.

That seems about right (0.00 / 0)
The first question is important, and it wasn't exactly what I wanted to answer. Unfortunately, we were moving pretty quickly into the segment and I was a bit unprepared for it. My first appearance, sue me. Next time will be better :)

That being said, I felt like I did all right after that -- the point about responsibility felt solid, and forcing Ben to respond with the (kind of sad, really) line about how Dems' responsibility was to sit in the Legislature and take what the GOP served up was good.

Once you got going (0.00 / 0)
things got better. A fine first effort.

Until you get a few more of these under your belt, I'd suggest keeping your first couple of answers fairly short.
You are going to get asked the basic what do you think about X question. What I'd do is once you know you are going to be on get that answer boiled down to a sentence.

What I liked was that you seemed to know what you were talking about even if you couldn't quite express it. I got it and I'm sure most readers here got it. But when I asked a friend to watch it, she ended up asking me what you meant. That was both good and bad. Good that you conveyed an level of expertise to her (and seemed more like a real person in her words), bad because if I wasn't there the points could be lost. Having read your stuff for some time now, I feel confident in expecting good things.

Thanks! (0.00 / 0)
Constructive feedback is great -- I'll do my best to live up to expectations next time around. I'll be interested in your thoughts on the entry I just posted with additional thoughts on the segment.

Look, going on Fox9, facing off agains GOPer Golnik... (0.00 / 0)
...is a set-up from the start.

Joe's not a professional hack like Golnick; Fox isn't exactly neutral territory.

To come out unscathed is an accomplishment.

And remember, the very first thing Golnick said, was complete BS.  That's "B" as in "bull" and "S" as in "(stuff").

"To no surprise, GOPer Ben Golnik starts out by telling a whopper about Wisconsin's Fighting Fourteen walkout: "unprecedented."  Yeah, "right."

"Those that forget the lessons of history, tend to vote GOP"
