Today's Example Of Republicans Run On The Platform "Gov't Doesn't work!"...

...and once elected, they prove it.

Do poor people cheat?  Of course - just look at Denny Hecker, Tom Petters, Frank Vennes - the last two, noted pals of Michele Bachmann (well, Norm "Smokescreen" Coleman, too).  People on welfare?  Not so much pals of Bachmann (nor Norm), but yes, some of them have been known to cheat.  And the State has been diligent in finding ways to prevent cheating, such as going from actual paper "stamps" in the "food stamp" program to using plastic "debit cards" - EBT (Electronic Benefit Transfer) Cards.  Diligent as the State is, cheaters are equally diligent in finding ways to beat the system - which is why, for instance, that years ago the State quit allowing cash deductions from EBT cards at casinos.

I bring this up, because I saw this tweet:

It has to do with this map, that the GOPers hauled out at the State House yesterday:

That map shows that of almost $500,000,000 in assistance, about $10,000,000 was spent outside of Minnesota - with about half of that in neighboring states.

That map allegedly "supports" a bill introduced yesterday by Kurt Daudt, GOP=GreedOverPrinciples that is, in essence a solution in search of a problem.  In other words, a waste of time.  GOPers want to pass a law that money in an EBT account can only be spent in Minnesota - even though Federal Law says, for instance, that Food Stamp money, even in an EBT account, can be spent anywhere.

"Tentherism" ring a bell, here?

The amount of money that could - and should - be tightened up out of that $10 million is only about $3 million, according to federal law.  My point is that the time to take time and tighten that $3 million up, is AFTER the GOP has put their budget plan forward AND put their plan to put Minnesotans back to work.

It's about priorities - and so far this session, the GOP priorities have been anything but putting a budget plan forward and planning to put Minnesotans back to work.

We are staring at a budget deficit of about $6 Billion, and these GOPer Tenthers are wasting time with a $3 million stunt like they did yesterday.  But hey, why work on the big problems, when you can trot out the ol' "welfare cadillac" canard?

Which is why I have to say, once again:  Republicans run on the platform "Government doesn't work!" - and once elected, they prove it.

Again, the repugs are out of touch with reality! (0.00 / 0)
If you live in Tyler, MN the only grocery store there is an overpriced tiny place, basicly a conveinence store with no pumps out front. There's two conveinence stores in town and a couple more in the next towns over, but they have the same limited selection and high prices. About 25 miles away are Marshall and Brookings, SD. Both have a WalMart supercenter, which is usually the cheapest store in the region. So if your drive to work, doctor appointments, etc. takes you toward Brookings you shop their, getting the best deal for yourself and the taxpayers. And the dollars you spend will appear on the paranoid repug's map, "proof" that "welfare" money is crossing state lines!

Food Stamps are not a welfare program- Food stamps are a farm subsidy program, and a federal one at that. All Minnesota does is administer the program. And no matter whether the EBT cards are used in WalMarts in Minnesota or another state- the federal dollars will end up in Bentonville, Arkansas, rather than Minnesota. So we have repugs making mucho drama about which outlet of the beast of Bentonville a larger governmental unit's ag subsidies are getting spent in... it'd be humorous if the repug legislators didn't have actual work to do, like balancing Minnesota's budget!

Notice how GOPers sensationalize the trivial? (0.00 / 0)
According to this interactive map it appears there were just four transactions in Hawaii, totalling a mere $263.76; in the U.S Virgin Islands there were only 22 transactions totaling $626.11.

How much taxpayer money does Rep Daudt want to spend in order to prevent $263.76?  And what if, perhaps, some of that $263.76 was lawful expenditures, perhaps, by a mother visiting one of her children stationed in Hawaii serving in the US military?  Would Rep Daudt have a problem with that?

Once again, Tenther GOPers demonstrate that GOP now stands for Greed Over Principles

"Those that forget the lessons of history, tend to vote GOP"

I don't know if its sensationalizing the trivial (0.00 / 0)
I think spending hundreds of hours of staff time to find .99 spent in Albany LA and two transactions totaling $8.93 in Baker, FLA is time well spent. I mean, wow, that's real money.

Repugs want to punish frugal spenders... (0.00 / 0)
Case 1: You live in rural Wilkin county within sight of the SD border. It's many miles to a MN grocery store, and the weather's bad. Closer by is the tribal casino, and they offer a bargain buffett complete with diabetic friendly offerings. So you take the family out for dinner and pay with the EBT card. The casino has a convienence store too and prices their foods reasonably to give tribal members a break, so they shop their too.

Case 2: A working poor family from southeast MN treks to central Illinois for a relative's funeral and to deal with the estate. Instead of eating fast food, they buy groceries with their EBT card every morning and put it in the cooler and make sandwiches and such with cold cuts as they travel. And before they leave Illinois they stop at a Costco and load up on groceries with their EBT card for far less than they'd cost at home.

In both cases by buying food outside of Minnesota these families have gotten better value for themselves, the taxpayers, and the farmers who the Food Stamp program is designed to benefit. But republicans don't like that.

and now its time to leave your laptops to do some citizen lobbying "up close and personal" at the Capitol", office by office and future committee hearings regarding Kurt Daudt's initiative.

If you get time in a committee meeting, alert The Uptake and get more coverage.  The news service is finally getting space in the press bunker in the Capitol's basement.
