Ten questions to ask your elected Senate District officials

As TwoPuttTommy noted in his "Tone Deaf" and other comments from the field post, the major concerns of DFL activists centers around messaging.  Why is it that the discussion is always driven by Republican narratives?  How can we change this?

Our problem isn't that we can't do this or don't know how to overcome and break down Republican messaging.  I argued previously in my Comprehensive Communications Strategy is not reinventing the wheel post that we've done this all before.  And successfully.  Why hasn't the DFL had a solid communications strategy lately?

In 2011, the State Central Committee elects the Party Chair.  Will they elect a new chair or stay the course?  This is an excellent time to discuss our messaging as I have heard rumors of several people interested in running.

Furthermore, most of the DFL Senate Districts have yet hold their post-election meetings.  I urge you to go to these meetings and ask your elected SD officials some of these questions about our party's communications strategy:

  1. Why does it always appear that the DFL has been caught off guard without a message when the GOP attacks?
  2. Why has the DFL moved away from using new media and social networks while the campaigns and public have adopted these technologies?
  3. Why have several 2010 local candidates come forward talking about a lack of messaging?
  4. Why didn't the DFL add local candidates to all of the Margaret for Governor mailers they sent pre-primary?
  5. Why are phonecalls and doorknocks being duplicated by the Coordinated Campaign and caucuses to the point of harassing voters?
  6. There was a mailer that arrived after the election. This has happened several times in recent elections with our sample ballot. Why does this keep happening, how much did the mistake cost and what is being done to prevent it in the future?
  7. Multiple DFL endorsed candidates lost in the primary. What will be done to ensure our endorsed candidates are protected by the DFL in the future?
  8. Why didn't the DFL do a state-wide listening sessions in 2009, like they did in 2007?
  9. Will we do listening sessions in 2011?
  10. What is being done to get resources into the DFL constituency caucuses for our important outreach efforts?

For more on voters getting harassed -- multiple calls and conflicting lit -- read ericf's Independent groups and duplication of canvassing.

Phone harassment (0.00 / 0)
Oh, geez, yes, #5 - it was not uncommon for us to get three back-to-back phone calls in one evening from different people at the same coordinated campaign phone bank.  Totally incompetent...

Well, that blows (0.00 / 0)
I've been suggesting Kristin Sosanie get on this for a while.  DAMN.

Two Putt is right about the deaf ears situation.  You have pointed out (in the form of a question) many things I've been thinking.

But Eric, why expose the DFL right now?  Let's think about this.  If we wander over to Republican shock blogs, they don't attack their own.

Here's what I think needs to happen.  The DFL needs to make you and others who truly care about DFL activities "party insiders" with a suggestion box of sorts, and a better communication system.  There needs to be a place to vet ideas which is outside of a general public purview.  Someone should be roping in shock bloggers, taking their suggestions and working for a solution.  It's not that the party, whoever that is, has to agree with every idea... but a listening ear would be helpful, and the idea that we want elected officials and good things done should prevail.

BTW, if I were the general public, the message I get from your post is that one particular political party isn't doing well.  I don't like to read stuff like that.  I like to move forward and take the best action.

Define shock bloggers (0.00 / 0)
Or better yet don't, and simply apologize for making a false comparison between my cohort asking folks to show up to their SD meetings, willing to ask questions and work for the betterment of the party and the slime you find on MDE.

False comparisons and triangulation with your own team is not a strategy, Holly. Move along.

And another thing (0.00 / 0)
After the 2010 elections, I think it's safe to say the party isn't doing as well as it can be. Or did you take Chairman Melendez's pseudostatistical toy to heart and conclude that we actually won this year?

Our state of affairs is not up for debate. How we handle it and where we go from here are.

Oh and another thing Eric (0.00 / 0)
I believe most blog posts are op ed, not newspaper articles (depends on the research done, perhaps)  But here's something we should clarify:  Do we agree that blogs are advertising?  I ask you: What advertiser in their right mind would say what is wrong with their product?  My toothpaste sucks, but it could be better if I did this?

Nonsense (0.00 / 0)
Tons of news gets broken on blogs. Or shared and echoed, yes sometimes with an editorial comment or not. And no, blogs are not advertising. They, and other social media, tend to be most useful in informing activists or those very interested in politics. The general public, particularly independents, are not likely coming to blogs.

I would be more impressed with the argument that only the DFL state central committee listserv should be allowed to talk about what happened with the election if I was more impressed with the quality of the political commentary and insights shared on the state central committee listserv. There are some very good comments. A bunch, however, are garbage.

You, Holly, are cultivating an attitude of distrust between "the DFL" and blogs by your comments by speaking negatively of them, as is true of other SCC members. This should be a partnership. Disdain for blogs should have no part in this relationship.

Oops, sorry... (0.00 / 0)
I believe blogs are wonderful tools.  I don't have disdain for blogs.  Just disdain for using them so we hurt ourselves.

Thanks for your input.  Me

BTW (0.00 / 0)
And BTW, I didn't say we should love everything and keep quiet.  I said I thought there should be some sort of listening done by the DFL -- I'd very much like us to be able to submit suggestions and have the DFL use an established process to receive those suggestions.

As for Eric's article, it is quality leadership (asking us to do something, instead of just pointing out what is wrong)... but it seems like a time to send the DFL suggestions off the public's radar screen.  Does that make sense?

Bulldog, you must only read some of the e-mails.
