Where We Are, Two Weeks Out - The Macro Edition

Two weeks from tonight is shaping up as a disaster for Minnesota Republicans; I'm going to recap a few reasons why.  Sure, odds are that they'll hold Kline's, Paulsen's, and Bachmann's seats in Congress, but that's about it.  For Governor, place your bets on Dayton.  And look for a clean sweep for the DFL in all of the rest of the Constitutional Offices, too.  So, why is the tragc and deeply-flawed extreme rightwing ideologue GOPer Tom Emmer trailing?  One reason is Emmer's pathetic and pathological inability to tell the truth. Another reason, according to the Minnesota Conservatives blog, is:
TwoPuttTommy :: Where We Are, Two Weeks Out - The Macro Edition
After receiving the endorsement at the state convention, the Emmer campaign was very badly run indeed. MC didn't stay on the sidelines because the stakes of losing were too high. We thought the month of July would never end: 100K earning servers, tip-credit, a town hall forum/seppuku replete with a shower of pennies played endlessly on tv and the internet. Some of this was called a teaching moment. We called it political malpractice if not suicide. MC can't bring itself to recount the various DUIs that cropped up.

"...the Emmer campaign was very badly run indeed."

Yep!

For instance, they've never gotten in front of Emmer calling Democrats un-American, and they've never gotten in front of the Facebook pictures Tom Emmer wishes you hadn't seen.

That Minnesota Conservatives post, "MN-Gov Race: Prepositioning the Scapegoats" is a good read.  One thing they missed in their discussion of the GOP Party, was Tony Sutton's Hatch-like moment - calling the the thirteen former GOP state legislatiors that endored IP Candidate Tom Horner "quislings".

Sutton said  "There's a special place in hell for these quislings."  Sutton later backed off by saying he only meant to call those 13, including WWII Veteran George Pillsbury and Korean War Veteran Bill Belanger "traitors".

If the race tightens up, and Dayton wins in a squeaker, Dayton'll have Tony Sutton to thank.

This afternoon, I'll write a recap of the local races in Eden Prairie,
where the radicals controlling the local GOP has done their cynical worst "best" to mimic their bizarre bosses at the state and national level.  How bizarre?  So bizarre that it can only be mocked, ridiculed and scorned.  Which, of course, Jon Stewart excells at!  Stewart points out  GOP "leadership" really is shameless.  Let's look!

This video is just another example of why I say:  "reasonable people can no longer reasonably assume Republican "leadership" is telling the truth."

I understand the blogger doesn't want to be accused of spin after the election. The losing side's circular firing squad is always ugly. It sounds like the author thinks there was no recovering from July. I actually agree Emmer did himself serious damage, and I noticed the talk of taking both houses of the legislature withered at that point. Still, and maybe this is just coming from the side that expects a decent election night, I'm withholding my criticisms of the candidates/campaigns until after election day. I do have some, but all I'd do is give Republicans something to quote.

I have fun with some of you on the Twitter; those few liberals with a sense of humor! So here I am, commenting briefly on TwoPutt's post.

Both parties are served by honesty, in my view. And such should not be seen by party regulars as sabotage. I wonder on a blog like this how many think that the governor's race would have been put away by now if MAK were your candidate? I've been rather public in saying we would not have had a serious chance. Her Goldilocks approach (some cutting, some "revenue" raising) struck a perfect Minnesota middle. Plus she would be the first woman governor and identity politics, pathetically, still matter.

But you didn't! You went with Dayton. Well imagine my surprise when we lost that advantage even before Mark won the primary. So it goes.

I disagree with TwoPutt in one regard: quislings. Most people had to look it up and it has long since passed into common parlance without the Nazi associations. It's simply a reach to say that if Emmer loses it is Tony Sutton's fault. I also thought it was thin gruel to make much of Vice President Bite Me's quote about strangling Republicans. Enough on both sides with the fake outrage.

Today at the Obama rally Amy Klobuchar said that Emmer believed servers made 100K. Minnesota Conservatives, my co-blogger Barbara Malzacher included of course, knew that July was key. That this disastrous issue for my side was repeated at the rally only shows how right we were. We often wish to be wrong.

One party government in Minnesota, however, will prove to be a disaster. The past (two years) is prologue.

Thanks for the Commentary, John. (0.00 / 0)
It's rare - and refreshing - to disagree with a Conservative that isn't disagreeable.

And I do disagree with John on the "Quisling" deal; here's why:  I'm guessing John didn't serve in the nation's armed forces.  I served.  My brother served.  One Grandfather was in Europe the day the Armistice was signed ending WWI; one was Stateside preparing to ship out.  My father-in-law served on a submarine in the South Pacific during WWII; one kid o' mine will be commissioned as a Second Lieutenant next spring.

Quite frankly, while John and many others may have had to look up the meaning of "Quisling" - many veterans didn't.  I'm guessing the targets of GOP State Chair Tony Sutton's comment - Republican former State Senator George Pillsbury, who served in WWII and Republican former State Senator Bill Belanger - didn't have to look it up either.

If Dayton wins by a real squeaker, GOP State Chair Tony Sutton's "quisling" comment, along with other comments may have been the proverbial straw.

I encourage those reading this to follow John on twitter; I do.  John is on twitter here.
