Rena for Rep

Speaking for myself only.

Tomorrow, we vote. Or rather, those of you lucky enough to have the requisite age requirements do. We've got impressive slates of candidates in a long list of important races. The choices made by the small group of passionate citizens make up the DFL primary electorate will have potentially huge implications on our communities, on our station and on our nation. But out of all those races I'm most excited about the chance to elect Rena Moran as the DFL nominee for State Representative in 65A.

Like most of the races tomorow this is a race to choose between multiple good DFLers. This one we won't even have to take into account electability, the winner would have to intentionally try to lose the race in November. Tomorrow will be about picking the best possible representative for the fine people of 65A. I believe that person is Rena Moran.

Both candidates are largely the same on the issues. The question then is who has the right perspectives and experiences to make an impact at the Capitol.

Rena moved here 10 years ago from Chicago with her kids in search of a better life. They moved into a homeless shelter with almost nothing where they lived for several months. But soon Rena was able to find a minimum wage job at the Mall of America, she worked hard, got a better job and by 2006 she had moved from homeless to homeowner.

But a sense of community is the core of who Rena is. She started getting involved in public work and when the city paved only half her street but assessed the whole street for the cost she organized her neighbors and got the city to pave the whole street. She quit her corporate job to become a Wellstone Organizing Fellow with Wellstone Action where she worked for Urban Embassy registering over a thousand voters for the 2008 elections. Today she works as an organizer for Prevent Child Abuse Minnesota. Being an organizer is at the heart of the kind of campaign Rena has been running and the kind of legislator she would be. It's been inspiring to be a part of such a great grassroots campaign, full of passionate people from all walks of life, dedicated to a better future for our communities. Win or lose it was a honor to be a part of such an amazing campaign.

We need that mentality, we need those kinds of experiences and that style of leadership at the Capitol. We need someone who will work with the community and empower us all to be the change. Anyone elected to the State House will have just one voice to speak out with and influence the body. But Rena's would be a powerful voice for the voiceless. For those who our society leaves behind.

We need to complete Rena's journey from homelessness to the House. I hope you'll join me by voting for her (if you can) and if you can't consider donating or doing what I will be doing tomorow: Getting Out The Vote. Every vote will count in this race and I'll be up bright and early dialing "651" again and again. I hope you'll join me. Together we can build a better future for Minnesota.
