Time for a pre-caucus gubernatorial poll

by: Joe Bodell

All right MPP community members -- who are you supporting for the DFL endorsement?

Not "who do you think will win" or "who do you think is the most electable", because those are separate and different questions.

Who are you supporting?

Joe Bodell :: Time for a pre-caucus gubernatorial poll

Paul Thissen, (4.00 / 1)
I've always liked his platform and, after seeing his fundraising numbers, I figure he's for real.

That being said, in the general election, I'll be voting for the DFLer without so much as a single whine or whimper even if it's not 'my guy.'

"My guy" (4.00 / 1)
Well said.

In the caucuses, let's get behind whoever we think is the best candidate (for me, that's John Marty). In the general election, though, it's whoever has the DFL next to their name, no matter who it is. I mean, let's face it... we have a great selection of candidates on our side of the aisle.

Mark Dayton (0.00 / 0)
Here's why I'm supporting Mark Dayton.
http://aprilknight.blogspot.co...

Don't cook your own goose.

Some notable facts: (0.00 / 0)
Most of the DFLers who have announced so far have raised more money in 2009 than the apparent GOP leader.

Matt Entenza has outraised everyone so far!

Matt Entenza is leading in the poll!

Do I sense... Momentum for Matt!

Thissen over Entenza (0.00 / 0)
Matt Entenza will be a formidable candidate because of his great personal wealth, but I like Paul Thissen because he offers so much optimism, confidence, and intelligence that I am certain we can and will do better with him at the helm.  His fundraising numbers prove he can raise the money to win.  Republicans will be scared to death of Thissen because he represents the potential of the new DFL guard leading this state for the next decade or two.  Let's get behind Paul -- let's win!

[ Parent ]
I mostly agree... (3.00 / 1)
Thissen will be our one of our best candidates for 2012 and beyond... Amy Klobuchar would make a great supreme court justice, and who knows what other opportunities might present themselves?

But for now, Thissen is a rising young star running on the same old progressive DFL platform. Only Matt has the 21st century vision (note his advocacy for green energy) to solve 21st century problems.

[ Parent ]
Thissen (0.00 / 0)
And they're absolutely nothing rotten the Republicans could possibly say about him, either, except for his Democratic platform. There's nothing for them to dig up on him personally.

Don't cook your own goose.

This Poll (4.00 / 1)
I see that some of the campaigns are emailing their frinds to come here and vote. Also, remember that most voters don't even know about this website.

Don't cook your own goose.

[ Parent ]
Coleman! (0.00 / 0)
Yes we have a great group of DFLers running but this morning Norman was on MPR talking as if he's running.  We need a real progressive with the financial resources and smarts to make sure that the Coleman nightmare does not happen.  Matt Entenza's got the vision, the energy and the fundraising capacity to win.

But can Norm pay all his mortgages, etc.... (0.00 / 0)
On a governors salary? He does get free use of the governor's mansion though, and I suppose he could rent out all the rooms he won't use to lobbyists?

[ Parent ]
Norm Coleman running? (0.00 / 0)
At an event last month, Secy of State Mark Ritchie said his recurring nightmare is that Norm Coleman runs, and that it's a really close election, so that state law requires a recount, and Norm is losing by a couple hundred votes ... at which point Mark Ritchie wakes up in a cold sweat.

[ Parent ]
Right on every issue and no pac/lobbyist $ (4.00 / 1)
John Marty seems to be the real deal...I doubt he'll promise change we can believe in and then side with the crooks.

With so much great competition, the only choice is the one that seems most honest, consistent, and visionary. For me, that man is John Marty!

Every issue we care about, John is as close to perfect on it as is humanely possible.

Dayton (0.00 / 0)
Dayton has a long history of being honest, having integrity and being progressive. He went beyond the call of duty in the Senate when he gave the speech against the marriage amendment and when he went to bat about the 911 lies told. He did so many excellent things and is still eager to go to work for the people of Minnesota.

Don't cook your own goose.

[ Parent ]
But Matt's got the Momentum! (0.00 / 0)
It's telling that what looked like a republicon tracker was following Matt at the CD7 forum yesterday.

Momentum? (3.50 / 2)
dyna, you seem to be a delusional Entenza supporter/campaign worker.  To somehow say that he "has the momentum" because he's leading by 7 votes in a poll is laughable.  The Republicans have had trackers on some of these candidates since before they announced (Rybak and Dayton), and it would be their dream for the DFL to back somebody like Entenza who half of his own party thinks is a crooked guy.  Electing Entenza in the primary would be a dream come true for the Republicans, and would keep many DFLers home on Election Day.

[ Parent ]
Thanks for the free psych diagnosis... (0.00 / 0)
BTW, do you have a DSM or ICD code for "delusional"  handy so I can submit your bill to my insurance company?

Seriously George, the momentum for Matt is measurable in ways beyond this poll. At the CD7 candidate forum yesterday Matt was frequently interupted by the audience's applause during his presentation, the other candidates pretty much just got the customary "Minnesota nice" applause at the end of their presentations. Afterward it took forever to get Matt out of the place- seemed like everyone wanted to talk to him.

[ Parent ]
That's just not true (0.00 / 0)
That's funny, because I attended the CD7 forum yesterday, and that was not the case.  He had a good opening stump speech that got a good amount of applause, but during the two middle sections and his closing he didn't seem to connect with the audience at all.  He also stares awkwardly out at the audience for a few seconds when he grabs the microphone.  Not sure what that's all about.

Also, after the forum was over, he wandered around the room and had to walk up and engage people, while other candidates stood by the door and got swarmed.  Not sure what you saw that indicated otherwise.

[ Parent ]
Matt got mucho applause- (0.00 / 0)
During his answers to the questions and opening speech. Matt didn't stand by the door because so many DFLers wanted to talk to him that he couldn't make it out of the room.

[ Parent ]
Delusional (0.00 / 0)
If you think the charisma challenged Matt Entenza blew everyone away with his speaking, you clearly are delusional.

[ Parent ]
I truly believe.... (0.00 / 0)
I believe that the DFL is benefiting from the same thing as B.O. did. We are motivated as hell to get rid of a destructive executive. I am undecided on who to support, but DFL won't stay home this election, just like Hillary supporters didn't stay home. The thought of another T-Paw is a hell of a motivator. Whatever your argument for/against a candidate, the DFL staying home is not going to happen!

[ Parent ]
Very True (0.00 / 0)
I totally agree.

Don't cook your own goose.

[ Parent ]
Wrong Place (0.00 / 0)
I must have clicked the wrong comment because my comment directly above this one went in the wrong place. I wasn't agreeing that no DFLer would stay home on election day. I've heard too many of them say flat out that if Entenza was running on the DFL ticket on the general election day, they would not vote at all.

Don't cook your own goose.

[ Parent ]
Yeppers, I'm politely disagreeing (0.00 / 0)
Remember PUMA? Party Unity My Ass? During the primary season there was no way Hillary voters would vote for Barrack. In fact, most Hillary voters would vote for McCain instead! Well, things are said in the heat of a primary passion that don't survive the cold reality of another Republican in the executive. You have to take with a grain of salt anyone saying they won't vote for the DFL nominee. I believe that they are passionate and believe what they say, but if it's not their guy vs. Seifert, you really think they'll sit it out?

[ Parent ]
Yes (0.00 / 0)
Some of them will, yes. Not if it's just a matter of not their guy. But if it's someone they vehemently oppose, then yes. Either that or vote Independent or Green Party or someone else. Actually, there are quite a few voters who are sick of both parties.

Don't cook your own goose.

[ Parent ]
Before getting cocky (0.00 / 0)
Before we get cocky that the DFLers are outraising the Republicans, let's consider that GOP donors might be holding back waiting to see whether Coleman is going to run.

I voted undecided.......but I am seriously... (0.00 / 0)
....leaning towards John Marty. I think the historical circumstances have changed since 1994 (our problems in the nation and state are dire and in need of progressive solutions). And the DFL nominee in 2010 will not be facing a popular, incumbent moderate Republican like Arne Carlson (who is not even much of a Republican anymore).

On another note, its nice to see the United HealthCare $$$$$$ put to good use with paid advertisments and paid staffers obviously rigging this poll ;-)!

I bet you wouldn't believe me if I told you which candidate had the most likely associates creating accounts just to vote in polls ;-)

Hence the eyewink! (0.00 / 0)
Because I think there's a lot of that going on.

Wouldn't Doubt It (4.00 / 1)
I wouldn't doubt that a bit. Sounds like something some of them would do. One guy told me he made 21 fake accounts for a Yahoo poll once.

[ Parent ]
rigging this poll? (0.00 / 0)
Joe, for about a decade now,Stonewall DFL Caucus has rules that say only people who are members at least 10 days before the endorsement screenings can vote at them.  To prevent a candidate from funding a bunch of new members who could come and vote to endorse him.

Perhaps you should do something like that in future polls like this -- limit voting to people who were registered at least 24 hours before the poll is announced.  That might keep the results more representative.

(So far today, I've received emails from 3 different campaigns urging me to vote in this poll.)

[ Parent ]

I had to log in to vote.  Maybe Joe can let us know how many new members joined today.

The only thing that worries me is taxing services (0.00 / 0)
I'd vote for them all, and I support them all, but the only thing I don't like is taxing services.

Cross R.T. and Thissen off your list (0.00 / 0)
IIRC, both support expanding the sales tax.

[ Parent ]
Slight correction (0.00 / 0)
Thissen has said numerous times he supports expanding the scope but lowering the rate of the sales tax. It's unclear whether this would result in actually "raising" the tax, since such a move would probably be close to revenue-neutral, but would even out some of the disparities that currently exist under that tax.

[ Parent ]
None the less, Entenza is not proposing a tax increase (0.00 / 0)
Matt proposes to grow our economy (and state revenues) by making Minnesota the Saudi Arabia of clean green energy. Note also that a lot of our tax dollars are spent on energy- electricity for streetlights, diesel fuel for snow plowing and school busses, and natural gas for heating our schools and colleges. By implementing Obama's plans to improve the energy efficiency of our public buildings Matt Entenza will free up wasted dollars spent on energy to improve our schools and public services.

[ Parent ]
Wow (0.00 / 0)
Is Entenza really using Republican talking points and failed Republican economic dogma?

[ Parent ]
Entenza's Green Energy Dream (0.00 / 0)
The new governor will have to deal with the budget crisis right away. We don't have time to wait ten or twenty years for Entenza to create his green dream. Dayton has the right idea...tax the wealthy. Get some money in to pay for the deficit. Then worry about the green economy.

Don't cook your own goose.

[ Parent ]
Clean green energy is for real! (0.00 / 0)
Consider the Minneapolis Park Board- they spend around $5,000,000 a year just on buying energy. At first they were opposed to hydro power, but after seeing what they could be saving, they're looking into installing their own hydro power and turbine wind generators to reduce the $2,000,000 a year they spend on electricity. And we haven't even talked about how much more $$$ that can be saved by insulating park buildings, more efficent vehicles, etc..

Multiply those savings by the hundreds of state and local government agencies statewide and we're probably looking at billions in savings in energy costs. Then figure in the tax revenues from the labor intensive work of installing these energy upgrades and we might very well solve the budget shortfall. Then figure in the companies that will move to Minnesota to take advantage of our low energy costs and we just might have another Minnesota miracle without a tax increase.

[ Parent ]
How Long? (0.00 / 0)
And exactly how many years, or decades, will it take to implement this green dream? It will most likely take at least ten years just to make a dent.

Don't cook your own goose.

How long does it take to change a light bulb? (0.00 / 0)
Or install a low flow faucet head, attic insulation, or check the tire pressure on a government vehicle?

Don't Be Silly (0.00 / 0)
If it were that easy and that was all that there was to it, it would already be done.

Don't cook your own goose.

[ Parent ]
Plenty more to do... (0.00 / 0)
We've got plenty of buildings with no insulation, incandescent light bulbs, etc.. Then there's our part time governor who wastes energy traveling all over the world and he takes a state patrol entourage along with him.

[ Parent ]
Paul Thissen will lead us to victory (0.00 / 0)
I'm supporting Thissen because he represents the best of what the DFL wants and needs: progressive vision, innovative leadership, and proven results.  Thissen brings all the best the DFL has to offer, without the unseemly baggage that Dayton and Entenza will have to drag around.

Still Delusional (0.00 / 0)
What baggage?  The baggage from Entenza's 2006 run for attorney general where he got caught investigating Mike Hatch, repeatedly lied about it (and is still lying about it) and had to drop out of the race.  In your world, Dyna, did that not happen?

You obviously believe everything Entenza says, but Minnesota voters are going to see Entenza as a liar and a cheater, and a guy who is only still around because he has his wife's United Health Care millions to spend.

[ Parent ]
No one cares..... (0.00 / 0)
Again, I am undecided, but some of these arguments are just silly. The public really could care less about what happened in the 2006 attorney general race. Heel, the general public probably can't remember what happened last week politically, much less a down ticket race 4 years ago!! I for one could care less what someone did, or did not do to Mike Hatch 4 years ago. Make some better arguments.

[ Parent ]
You could not be more wrong (0.00 / 0)
That kind of naive, and frankly, idiotic thinking is why the DFL keeps losing elections.  To the extent the general public doesn't remember, the will certainly be reminded when the general election campaign comes around. The idea that Entenza's 2006 scandal will go unnoticed in 2010 is simply laughable.

Beyond ideology, honesty and integrity are of paramount importance to voters.  And the perception of Matt Entenza is going to be that he is a liar and a cheater, who is buying the election with his wife's ill-gotten money.

[ Parent ]
Wow (0.00 / 0)
Idiotic? Wow? I usually gauge what a normal, rationale, caring voter would do based on my wife. She is brilliant, informed, and cares about the process, but she is not obsessed. My wife wouldn't know one thing about what happened in an Attorney General's race in 2006, and it is hard to explain all the "intrigue" in a 30 second spot. Entenza may be the worst candidate ever, but you are going to have to do better than calling me an idiot and bringing up obscure campaign machinations from years ago. Seriously, ask 100 Democrats and I bet 5 of them even know what the hell you are talking about. Who is your candidate anyway Dan?

[ Parent ]
Yes (0.00 / 0)
First, if your wife doesn't know what happened in the AG's race in 2006, she certainly can't claim to be very well informed.  But this fall, if Entenza is the nominee, she certainly will know about the scandal that drove Entenza from the AG's race.   You can put it in a 10 second spot - Entenza spied on his political rival - the man who was investigating the wrongdoing of Entenza's wife's company - Entenza got caught, lied about it, and had to drop out of the race.

My preference would be for Thissen or Rybak, but basically anyone except Matt Entenza, who would have no chance if he didn't have millions of dollars to pour into the race.  And yes, pretending this isn't a big deal is idiotic.

[ Parent ]
Dan, how come Matt and Lois aren't facing charges for all you accuse them of? (0.00 / 0)
For most of the last decade we've been haunted by Bush appointed U.S Attorneys that were on a mission to put prominent democrats behind bars. Matt and Lois, being active DFLers and major party supporters, practically had targets on their backs. Same for Mark Dayton, R.T. Rybak, and the Bush administration would have loved to silence that tireless voice of the people, Tom Rukavina. But our great DFL candidates haven't been charged with any offense higher than a parking ticket.

So Dan, if you've got some evidence take it to the relevant prosecuting attorney... And if I see any more of your baseless accuasations around the blogosphere I'll just assume you're a republicon troll.

[ Parent ]
Strawman (0.00 / 0)
That is either the worst strawman argument I have ever seen or you actually just don't get it.  I really can't tell.  As I explained when you raised the same lame argument with regard to Entenza's ethics, ethics violations and criminal violations are not the same thing.  There was nothing illegal about Entenza spying on Hatch and lying about it.  It was just unethical and political suicide, which is why he dropped out of the race in 2006.  You do at least acknowledge that Entenza quit the 2006 AG race, right?  Here is a link, just in case you need to read up on it:

http://minnesota.publicradio.o...

Entenza has been charged with more than a parking ticket, by the way.  He has been charged with multiple campaign finance violations and has paid thousands of dollars in fines.  Another link for your reading pleasure:

http://wcco.com/local/entenza....

A $28,000 fine sounds like a bigger deal than a parking ticket.

And while Entenza's wife has not personally been charged with any crimes (she has been sued personally for civil fraud, however) for her work with United Health Care, the company has been prosecuted and fined in nearly every state.  You can read about this lovely outfit that paid Ms. Entenza $35 million dollars here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U...

Hatch was one of the attorney generals investigating United Health Care, which is why it was a big deal that a United Health Care exec's husband running for AG investigating Hatch was such a big deal - that's the ethics thing I was talking about.

[ Parent ]
You have your ethics, and we have ours... (0.00 / 0)
I'm into "ethical investing"- I try to invest in companies that reinvest in communities, treat their workers well, etc.. But there's several other kinds of  "ethical investors"- like the religious fundamentalists that buy stocks in companies that don't have GLBTI anti discrimination policies or provide coverage for reproductive services in their health insurance plans. Now you can see why we don't make "ethical" transgressions punishable by law- We can't even agree as to what "ethics" are.

Dan, if you haven't noticed, you're the only person in this discussion alleging ethical transgressions by any DFL candidate. To top it off, your allegations  include a really twisted and perverse conspiracy theory that Matt's alleged investigation of the AG's office was connected to some AG's office investigation of United Health. You present no evidence to support said perverse conspiracy theory.

In conclusion Dan, you ain't come up with any nonsense I ain't already seen, and you'd be laughed out of any prosecutor's office with the "evidence" you've got.

[ Parent ]
Ha Ha (0.00 / 0)
"You have your ethics, and we have ours..."

Yes, Entenza and his supporters certainly do have their own ethics.

[ Parent ]
No one cares about Entenza (0.00 / 0)
Dan is right; you're not getting a huge backlash because people have already wasted enough time on Entenza.

[ Parent ]
Uninformed (0.00 / 0)
Dyna, you are uninformed. I can think of at least one candidate who got a ticket for something a lot more serious than a parking ticket. And it wasn't anyone whose last name begins with the first half of the alphebet.

And the last I heard, being unethical and a liar is not against the law, more's the pity.

Don't cook your own goose.

Undecided (0.00 / 0)
I'll be balloting undecided in the non-binding but state mandated poll on Tuesday, February 2nd, and if we have to do a walking subcaucus, at this point, I would call an "undecided" subcaucus.

I have been leaning towards Dayton, Marty or Entenza, but yesterday's shenanigans at the DFL Progressive Caucus make it harder to consider supporting Marty. He may be the best candidate, and the strongest candidate on issues, legislative track-record and has improved his presentation and style as a candidate dramatically, that move by key supporters or staff was a blunder. I wish the effort taken to keep that endorsement process closed had been spent on either growing the progressive caucus or on legitimate campaign activity on behalf of a legitimately progressive candidate.

Impeccable is Right (0.00 / 0)
I totally agree. It sounds like the Progressive Caucus endorsement was like the MAPE endorsement of MAK. The board made the decision and expected everyone to follow it. Don't get me wrong, I think John Marty is a great guy. The problem is that he's so far left that he probably won't be able to get the swing voters and the independent voters and then we'll lose to the Republicans again. I was also at the Progressive Caucus on Sunday. I couldn't vote because I'm not a member, but I was glad to hear someone stand up for Dayton, although he didn't mention that candidate's name. He just talked about a candidate who started the Peace Department (that would be Dayton) and had taken other progressive initiatives in the past. The Progressive Caucus endorsement was made by only a handful or two of DFLers. Their membership is pretty low.

Don't cook your own goose.

[ Parent ]
Um, I am going to call you out on something.... (0.00 / 0)
.....because I think it's an unfair characterization even though it is true in a sense.

John Marty is a recognized progressive leader in the state so by definition he occupies space on the political "left". But your CONSTANT "warnings" of Marty being "too far left" are disingenuous, outdated, and sounds too much like a Republican attack.

As you know, I was at the SD 50/51 Candidates forum last Thursday and there is NOT very much difference between all of the candidates (and even your preferred candidate Mark Dayton). They are ALL progressive and by definition would be considered on the "left" politically.

My point is then twofold. First, please stop using Republican rhetoric by using the term and warnings about ANY candidate being "too far left" when ALL of them are on the left. Secondly, given the histrorical circumstances we currently living in, we need to embrace our progressive values and not automatically dismiss them as "too far left". Now is the time to be proud about standing up for the right things, not hide away from them because DESPERATE Repulbicans might be "mean" to us and call us names.

"...if my thought-dreams could be seen, they'd probably put my head in a guillotine..."----Bob Dylan, 1965.

[ Parent ]
Why Marty? Why Now? (0.00 / 0)
While I think all of our DFL candidates share some key values, I do believe John Marty has shown clear bold vision over the years. More importantly, the leadership needed to get things done, ethical leadership. That everyone has an equal place at the table, not just insiders or special interests and no one is left out because of their status in society.

I also have seen that John can really get things done on important issues like health care, and the Minnesota Health Plan. We can't wait for federal Medicare for all, and sorry Matt, MN Medicare just won't work.

John Marty gets it, and is able to bring together the diverse stakeholders necessary to actually make change happen and get from lofty ideas to a really better everyday for everybody.

That's why he's my guy.

HR 676 (federal medicare for all) likely before November 2010 (0.00 / 0)
HR 676 is likely to enjoy renewed attention this spring, long before there is a DFL governor to sign the Marty bill. The Marty bill will not demonstrate the power of a single-payer model unless the Kucinich amendment/ERISA waiver language is reinserted into the bill that Obama may sign.

The Reid and Pelosi bills may ultimately no be reconciled, or reconciled bills may be rejected by one or both Houses after the confrerence report. Either way, as Conyers has said, Obama is viewed as a failure now if nothing passes before Christmas (oops!) or as a failure when the current bill is enacted and does not fix anything.

The unions and the progressives who are cynical about the federal process came onboard too late to support the Weiner and Kucinich amendments last time. The Minnesota Health Act supporters must realize that a few Federal reforms are necessary to make the Marty bill even feasible, and engage our federal representatives.

[ Parent ]
I don't see how that's likely (0.00 / 0)
Congressional Dems are going to be tired of health care for the rest of the session, if they're not already. With a jobs bill, a financial reform bill, and a clean energy bill all in various stages of passage, the House and Senate would both argue that they have plenty on their plate to keep them busy. I just don't see how they would revisit, let alone attempt to pass, any other sort of health care reform before November 2010.

[ Parent ]
Yes, But... (0.00 / 0)
I don't think he'll be able to win the general election.
