Updated: Gaertner will go to a primary, Kelley will abide

Susan Gaertner announced today that she'll appear in the DFL gubernatorial primary later this year.
"To be honest, I think my original plan to rely solely on the endorsement and convention process was too politically limiting.  I firmly believe that an effort to expand our reach to a much larger universe of Minnesotans is the right direction-especially since some in the field have been in that mode all along."

Gaertner, who has been campaigning in the close quarters of DFL activists for over two years, said her core supporters have been urging her to consider a primary run and have convinced her that someone of her political profile-an outsider with a reputation as a straight-shooting moderate-can do well in the larger primary universe.

"This doesn't mean that I have given up on anyone in the DFL.  Like other candidates who have stated their intention to run in a primary, I respect the party process and will continue to work to gain the support of delegates to the DFL convention. I will be working hard, however, to gain the support of the many loyal DFL voters who don't always get engaged in the caucus and convention process," Gaertner said.

It's a newsmaker in the race, to be sure, but when most candidates are going to be announcing fundraising totals, it doesn't quite fit -- does this mean that Team Gaertner raised a bunch of money but doesn't think they can get the endorsement, or they didn't raise much in '09 and think they need more time to get their message out?

In either case, this makes at least three, possibly as many as many as four or five candidates who are fairly sure to run in the primary. Let the deal-making begin!

Update: Tom Scheck of MPR just tweeted that Steve Kelley now *will* abide by the endorsement -- this was announced in early December in a letter to the DFL State Central Committee. Interesting back-room deals could be in the cards.

A wise move on her part... (0.00 / 0)
She wasn't gaining much traction with the delegates. And I suspect her campaign has come to the same conclusion I have- with so many candidates a DFL endorsement is just about impossible. On the other hand, she leaves herself open to being hounded by the RNC protesters on the parade circuit. Best of luck to her.

Someone knowledgeable... (0.00 / 0)
Could someone more juiced in on the nuances of the endorsement do a post the idea of the DFL not endorsing anyone?

Pros and Cons
Who it helps/hurts
How it might benefit or hurt us in the general
With an embarrassment of riches in the party, maybe it is time to leave it to the populace at large?

Holding out for a job? (0.00 / 0)
I think the subtext to this story is I won't run if you give me a job. I don't think she has enough votes for anyone to notice.

Could be... (0.00 / 0)
I don't see where she has any better chance in a primary than she does in the endorsement race.

And Steve, would you make up your mind! (0.00 / 0)
I'm gaining a deeper respect for the candidates that have been upfront about running in the primary all along.

primary more of a crapshoot (0.00 / 0)
Since a primary is a plurality election, it's a bit of a crapshoot who wins. You just have to be the first choice of a plurality, even if you're nobody's second or third choice. The endorsement, however, will almost surely be a multiple ballot affair with most delegates finding their first choices get dropped and they have to vote for second or third or fourth choice in order to get one candidate to 60%.

On the other hand, some people are alienated by decisions to ignore the result of the endorsement, while no one is offended by respecting it. Since there's a reasonable chance of no one gaining enough delegates to win endorsement, the best bet for a candidate making little headway is to respect the endorsement, hope there isn't one, then go into the primary without engendering any resentment.

I thought more candidates would drop out by now. If we don't have an endorsement, with everyone free to run in the primary, we could have a primary winner with a tiny plurality and even with most DFL primary voters strongly opposed. I don't know which candidate would engender such opposition, but it's a mathematical possibility.

Dropping Out (0.00 / 0)
I don't think anyone is going to drop out before the endorsement. Why would they? They've come this far. As far as running in the primary if they don't win the endorsement, the only two who can afford that kind of a campaign is Dayton and Entenza. Advertising in the media costs big bucks. Gaertner doesn't have that kind of money. I don't know how she thinks she could win by going to the primary without the endorsement.

Don't cook your own goose.

my guess (0.00 / 0)
My guess as to what she's thinking is that if there's no realistic hope of winning the endorsement, then the primary is all there is. Better to take the damage from not abiding now than later. She has plenty of time to decide if she has a chance in the primary.
