| Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) occupies what is considered a safe Democratic seat. The Cook Political Report ranks MN-05 as D+23. The Republicans recognize this and ignore this district.
Of course, Keith did have a Republican opponent last time out, Barb Davis White. The MN Republican Party told her to shut up when she complained about being ignored. She ran a good enough campaign to break the 20% barrier.
Keith had another opponent as well. This guy's campaign was so lame that he ended up picketing the Strib offices because they wouldn't mention him.
Davis White announced she is going to run again and we have a new nut job joining the race, Lynn Torgerson. Aside from needing a new hair stylist (what's with the Flock of Seagulls look anyway ... so 80s), she's a really, really deep thinker, too. This is how her issues page on her website gets started:
Grow and Protect America
We need to grow America. We need to protect America.
Strong Homeland Security
We need to maintain a strong homeland security. Our forces should be greatly commended for excellent job they have done protecting the citizens of the United States since September 11, 2001.
Yuh hum. Not kidding. Her words, not mine. Surprisingly, Torgerson claims to have a degree in political science. It all sounds rather innocuous and slightly daft until you reach the sections on Israel, Iran and Islam. |
Israel
The United States of America should support Israel. Israel is an ally of the United States. The United States of America does support, and should support, its allies. Israel also has values similar to the United States. For example, it is a democracy, and the only democracy in its region. Israel also supports similar freedoms we have the United States. The United States should not pressure Israel into a two state solution nor the road map.
Okay. Just a wee bit daft and oversimplified to the point of moronic, but then consider her language on Iran:
Stop Iran
Iran must be stopped. Iran has expressed its desire to wipe America off the map, and has expressed its desire to wipe our ally, Israel, off the map as well. At the same time of making such statements, Iran is developing nuclear technologies. Iran must not be allowed to develop and/or possess a nuclear weapon. Every available means should be used to stop Iran, including financial ones.
M'kay. I know what you're saying. There's a teensy bit of awareness there. We would have to consider her remarkably circumspect if she is in fact a regular watcher of Fox News. At least she doesn't openly advocate nuking Iran.
What really shows she's off the deep end is her anti-Islam rant. Apparently, she's the type of attorney that if it's really, really important, she's realy, really, long-winded. Here's a few of the generalizations about Islam:
The Quran actually teaches Muslims to kill people not of their faith, which includes Christians and Jews, which are labeled infidels. This is advocating criminal behavior. Thus, at a minimum, this portion of the religion of Islam cannot be protected by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. It is not "religion" recognizable under the First Amendment of the United States Constitution.
Further, evidently, the goal of Islam is to Islamize the entire world, or, global Islam. Well, this goal also conflicts with our First Amendment to the United States Constitution.
Apparently, she's never heard of evangelical christianity.
Islam also oppresses women. That conflicts with the equal protection of the laws guaranteed by the United States Constitution.
Funny, I think the same argument can be made against Christianity. Overly broad generalizations are always that way, though.
But then she really starts to bring the hate:
People say that we can't include the moderate, peace loving Muslims. Well, I agree. But, who are they? They need to stand up and identify themselves loudly and clearly say that they oppose Jihad and terrorism, etc. Who are these people? I cannot tell. It is not for me to go and try and find them. Rather, it is their duty to stand up and identify themselves, if there are any.
I think her rant is so long because she thinks she's actually building an argument instead of just free-basing hate. Anyway, I have repeatedly heard Keith talking about peace and brotherhood. Keith has repeatedly condemned violence of any kind. Heck, the progressive peaceniks made up a large part of the people out doorknocking for Keith. That's the proof in the pudding for me.
I recommend reading her whole rant. It definitely provides a look into a disturbed mind. |
