Note to Minnesota: Tom Emmer hates you

To the 55% of Minnesotans who voted for Barack Obama last November: Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer hates you.
"I don't think you can call yourself a freedom-loving American and be a Democrat," Emmer said. "I don't think that's a grassroots Democrat who says now 'That's not what I voted for, this isn't the America I want.' It's the leaders of the Democrat party."

While Emmer said political pundits said the Republican Party was dead after the last presidential election, the ideals and principles of the party are not dead.

The principles of self-determination, the right to make decisions and the right to achieve will resonate with voters and are what the state needs to return to for growth and prosperity, Emmer said.

"My name is Tom Emmer, and this big 'R' after my name is a God-given license to be a jackass." Of course, that whole self-determination thing stops when we're talking about civil rights or what committed couples do in their bedrooms, but that's neither here nor there.

The question is whether or not Minnesota demands an apology from Tom Emmer for his complete lack of respect for his fellow Americans. Such an apology is certainly richly deserved -- unlike any kind of leadership role for Tom Emmer in the future of Minnesota.

Jackass.

Beck/Hannity/Emmer's America never existed.... (0.00 / 0)
In their America, half of 20th century America never existed. FDR was never the most popular president of all time. Truman, Clinton, Teddy R., never got re-elected to multiple terms.

the American people chose progressives over conservatives over half of the 20th century, the American century. If ypu don't like those fellows, you must not like America because they represented America for the majority of a hundred year period.

Here's hoping that candidate Emmer wins the nomination. (0.00 / 0)
Reading the Marshall Independent story, there is more to this than a simple slam on the DFL ... it's about the basic function and responsibilities of government.

Emmer complains of "out-of-whack government growth in the state" taking aim at the Department of Health, Department of Health and Human Services, Human Rights Department and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).

That's the debate that the state needs to have ... what is the function of government.

Emmer is stating that Pawlenty has been mismanaging state government since he has not dismantled those functions during his tenure.  Not to say that he probably wished he had eliminated the Department of Health before he had to replace former health commissioner Dianne Mandernach who was sharply criticized for her handling of cancer data on Iron Range miners.  That's the function of the Department of Health ... the protecting the health of all Minnesotans ... making sure that the state government is prepared for emergencies such as swine flu ... and overseeing health facilities (such as hospitals, nursing homes and funeral homes) ... and granting licenses for health professionals.
That seems to be Emmer's concern ... "Minnesota has too many regulations and bureaucratic hoops and high taxes that can drive businesses out of the state and keep new ones from moving in".

It's a heckuva observation and one should be at the heart of the debate.

IF Minnesota turns a blind eye to health and civil rights concern, will business flock to the state and the citizens be happier ?
After all, Emmer cites that "two manufacturing companies left Luverne several years ago because of worker's compensation costs and other related issues."  Never mind that worker's compensation costs could be reduced by good safety programs ... do we want jobs where employees are in danger of being injured ?

That's the crux of Emmer and other conservative argument ... "we don't need no stinking government"
