Fridays with Franni

"It was an honor," Franken Franken said.  Franni is married to Sen. Al Franken (D-MN).  I'd asked if she attended the President's speech to Congress on Wednesday.  She had.  She and Al are self-confessed policy wonks.  "I've been watching these since I was a kid."

She was blown away to be sitting in the room where Obama gave this speech to the entire nation.

"I was sitting next to Sen. Bennett's mom," she continued.  Bennett is the new Senator from Colorado.  They got to talking.  "She actually worked for Hubert H. Humphrey.  Her whole family is amazing and has a history of public service."

"Michelle Obama was sitting nearby," she said.  "She's stunning, georgous.  I mean really.  So smart, too."

I asked about how many people were in the gallery.

"It was packed and there are only four or five rows," she explained.  "Each Senator and Representative got one ticket.  There's really not much room up there."

"Oh ... and I have really big news for you..." she exclaimed.

Big news after the fold ...

"Al's been promoted!" she shouted into my ear.  "He's now the 98th most senior Senator."

This is because of Sen. Kennedy's passing and the new, temporary Senator from Florida.

I asked about the remainder of her August vacation, if she could really call it that.

"No, not a vacation," she answered.  "A return home is the best way to describe it."

I asked about the fair.

"It was great, loved it," she replied.  "The booth (Al's booth) was a success.  Most people wanted to talk about healthcare."

I asked about her impression of the incident, caught on video, of Al calming down several teabaggers and have a civil discussion about healthcare.

"It turned into a great discussion, didn't it," she said.  "It just shows something about Minnesota.  We can have civil discussions, this should be an example of how to do it."

"But dairy farmers also brought their concerns and folks from up north, from logging communities," she added.  "Farmers and loggers are having really tough times, too."

"Oh, cheese curds," she instantly answered when I asked what her favorite food from the fair was.

And finally, before Franni had to run, I asked about her kids.

"They're great.  Thomasin is teaching in the Washington, DC public schools and Joe is heading to grad school."
