Minnesota Majority: breathtaking stupidity plus moronic logic equals conspiracy theory

Minnesota Majority is a right wing group that purports to be for voting reform among other things.  Their motto is "standing together for traditional values."  In their view, traditional values must include stupidity and conspiracy theories based upon moronic logic.

They filed a lawsuit because they are unwilling to accept that Al Franken won the MN-SEN race.  They claim that 40,000 votes weren't counted.  The MN Supreme Court refused to hear their case.  You'd think that'd end it ... smacked down by the Supremes usually ends things.  But not these clowns.

Jeff Rosenberg at MN Publius caught this:

The conservative coalition that filed suit in May against Minnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie and 31 county auditors is accusing the Minnesota Supreme Court of dismissing the lawsuit Thursday to spare itself "the embarrassment of having to acknowledge major election system problems after just issuing its decision in the (Norm Coleman-Al Franken) contest."
...
"Here you have a major U.S. Senate race being decided by just a few hundred votes, and along comes our case citing the fact that the secretary of state has been unable to account for tens of thousands of voters in the 2008 election," Minnesota Majority president Jeff Davis said in a statement. "You can see why the court might not want to touch this case with a 10-foot pole."

I love it when Republicans engage in moronic logic.  Dissection after the fold.

The Big E :: Minnesota Majority: breathtaking stupidity plus moronic logic equals conspiracy theory
Moronic logic is when you use bad logic to reach a conclusion.  Here's an example.

  1. Dogs are pets.
  2. Dogs bark.
  3. Cats are pets.
  4. Therefore, cats bark.

Every once in a while morons reach the correct conclusions, but never for the right reasons.  When you combine moronic logic with stupidity and the desperate need for a conspiracy theory to assuage their bitterness over losing ... well ... you reach conclusions like they do.

First of all, they believe that ACORN is somehow connected to Norm Coleman losing.  They are alarmed about a report alleging ACORN is involved with all kinds of things.  It's what conservatives do nowadays, they blame ACORN.  It simply cannot be that their message doesn't resonate with voters, their candidates are pretty pathetic (McCain, Palin, Coleman, etc.) and that their party is plummeting toward still unplumbed depths.  Nope, gotta be ACORN.

Okay ... now set that aside.  They offer no proof that ACORN is involved, but they immediately follow up with their concerns about "40,000 more ballots were counted than there were records of voters who cast them in the statewide voter registration system."  Of course, they don't say that they're the only ones who found this.

Gov. Tim Pawlenty, a Republican in case they forgot, has praised our election system.  He has also praised how the MN-SEN recount was conducted.  Pawlenty doesn't see the problems they do.

Their logic is that by putting the ACORN paragraph next to the MN Supremes rejecting their frivolous lawsuit, their knuckle-dragging, mouth-breathers readers will see the connection.  There's no real attempt at rationality here.

Let's analyze their logic:

  1. Unspecified irregularities occurred.
  2. They allege 40,000 votes weren't counted.
  3. They claim dead people voted.
  4. ACORN exists.
  5. Mark Ritchie is a DFLer.
  6. The MN Supreme Court rejected their lawsuit
  7. Therefore, we need a Voter ID law.

And the best part is there solution.  We need Voter ID laws.  They have no proof aside from unsubstantiated allegations and frivolous lawsuits.  They cannot point to any voter fraud.  Voter fraud is a federal offense and there just hasn't been any they can point to.

Voter ID law = solution for non-existent problem

I'm not going to link to their site, but google "Minnesota Majority" and the post was written on 7/24/09.

misleading at the start (0.00 / 0)
I just started looking at the election investigation entry on their web site, and they foisted a half-truth on their readers in the very first paragraph:
The release of a House oversight committee report alleging the systematic commission of numerous serious crimes by the Association of Community Organizers for Reform Now (ACORN) yesterday deepened Minnesota Majority's concerns about the integrity of Minnesota's elections

That's not a full committee report. That's the Republican minority report, as is apparent by mousing over the link. They do that a lot, like when global warming deniers claim a congressional report supports them, and it's Inhofe's staff's report.

Anyway, what if the convicted felons and noncitizens had photo IDs? Then ID laws wouldn't stop them.

Wait, wait (0.00 / 0)
One of the major complaints was that the Secretary of State database changes, like somehow voters are not ever supposed to move, become 18 years old, change names, etc. They were upset that all voter-day registrations were not immediately entered even though all available election officials were involved in a recount.

Couple things.... (0.00 / 0)
First, it is my understanding that you can get a state I.D./ license with a government issued photo I.D. In other words, an undocumented high school student, who has a school issued photo ID can get a state driver's license. So not only is this a solution where there is no problem, but it is not even a good solution.

Secondly, Minnesota Majority is a white supremacist group, not a far right group. I may seem obsessed about this, but any group that espouses the virtues of racial purity are white supremacists by definition.
