Next MN Governor Inherits $7.3 Billion Budget Hole

by: Grace Kelly

Thu Jun 25, 2009 at 10:20:47 AM CDT

As all of the these eager new Republican candidates for governor announce, every reporter should be asking how are you going to plug the $7.3 billion hole, inherited from Republican Governor Pawlenty? Especially when "no new taxes" comes up, every reporter should be pressing this question.

The $7.3 billion comes from a LAC June09 unallotment report by non-partisan staff, however let me take you there in easy steps.

Basically this huge budget imbalance comes from cutting taxes during the boom economic times, in the 1990s and 2001. Now structurally, we have an unbalanced Minnesota state budget that along with delayed maintenance such as road repair, which is really got to hit hard. No wonder Republican Governor Pawlenty is not running again and not even staying in the state.

Senate tax chair Tom Bakk walked me though these budget numbers. Tom Bakk is going around the state, talking to all newspapers trying to get this word out. I am sure that anyone can schedule through his aide at 296-8881. It is time to bring some real questions to the governor's race!

I wholeheartedly agree it's time, (0.00 / 0)
but, fat chance.  Especially in the corporate newspapers.  Their decisions will continue to be made based not on what provides their readers with actual facts, but on what's best for T-Paw's presidential run.

Leak out bad news slowly (0.00 / 0)
I think the governor is trying to leak out the bad news real slowly so there is no big news splash!

Looks to me like the rightwing theory of Starve The Beast... (0.00 / 0)

And I can't think of a single example (0.00 / 0)
where 'Starve the Beast' has ever had good results, except for the super-wealthy and their media propagandists.

Well, ya know, Dan - (0.00 / 0)
- all those GOPers that claim to "love competition"??!?

They're the ones that believe in "competition" so much we got:

Salem Communications and

Clear Channel and

Media News Group ....

....I could go on, but:  those GOPers that claim to "love competition" always seem to end up getting monopolies....

GOP and DFL No Friend of Competition (0.00 / 0)
Nobody seems to support competition nowadays - Democrats or Republicans. And that's really too bad because too much power in too few hands is not a good thing.

The Republicans have been advocates of consolidation.  If you'd suggest stopping a corporate merger or takeover through anti-trust laws, the Republicans would scream hands-off private business. But when you allow businesses to amass to such large scale, then everyone feels you need to bail them out  when they're failing to prevent tanking the economy. It would be better if we had true competition and could let smaller entities fail without bailouts.

But the Democrats aren't advocates of competition either.  The auto bailout is an example.  American taxpayers are financing the growth of an Italian auto company through the Chrysler-Fiat alliance.  Now the government is calling the shots at General Motors.  Little known to most people is that there is an offer on the table to purchase Pontiac and take it independent rather than just shut it down.  Google Pontiac and Jim Waldron, a Michigan car dealer, who has an investment group that would buy Pontiac.  But the government run GM would rather take taxpayer dollars than sell Pontiac to an investor group of entrepreneurs.  I guess they're afraid of the competition.

That's true.  However, when you consider the damage American "bidness done did" to the world - through Wall Street (and Wall Street really, Really, REALLY appreciated the misAdministration of Boy Blunder And The Plunderers!) you have to wonder if that American Taxpayer Payout wasn't a payoff for the damage Wall Street bidness done did...

I have no idea why.... (0.00 / 0)

Lots of blame (0.00 / 0)
No doubt there is a lot of blame to go around.  But I do think we should return to the principles of a competitive marketplace.  The Republicans who say they are pro-business are simply protectors of people who already have amassed wealth.  The Republicans are actually anti competition with their protectionist approach to consolidation in the marketplace.

Little known Pontiac buyout offer (0.00 / 0)
Here a link to the Pontiac buyout offer made by a group of investors.

This offer would preserve American jobs and increase competition in the auto industry.  Unfortunately some forces are working against this from happening.

Thank you both (0.00 / 0)
Thank you, Sen. Bakk, and Grace, for letting us know this important information.  Are there any source documents for us nerds to look at?
