This is a major development for the race. Choi has a lot of issues that he will need to address related to his handling of the RNC convention but he has a large, loyal and influential base of suporters. Pust and Pinto are also strong contenders, particularly Pinto has a active campaign already, and they will give Choi a run for his money. But Choi's strong base of support among some very influential people make him a contender no one can ignore. Here's the letter he sent out.
Dear Friends,
I want all of you to be the first to know that, tomorrow, I will take an important step toward becoming a candidate for Ramsey County Attorney in 2010 by filing papers to form an exploratory campaign committee. This will allow me to start raising money and building an exciting grassroots campaign in anticipation of a formal announcement later this year.
I would not be taking this initial step but for the support of my family and friends - including the overwhelming support and encouragement I have received from my on-line supporters. I am truly humbled and inspired by the more than 340 supporters who have joined the "Run Choi Run" Facebook group so far. And I'm not the only one who has taken notice - your "Run Choi Run" efforts on Facebook generated a front page story in the St. Paul Pioneer Press, a MinnPost.com column written by Blois Olson and a write up by the Minnesota Progressive Project.
In addition, I have received significant support and excitement for my possible candidacy from the legal and criminal justice communities and many opinion leaders and elected officials in Ramsey County.
I want to thank each of you for your support and I hope to do it in person at the "Run Choi Run" Happy Hour, scheduled for Wednesday, May 20th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Sweeney's Bar in Saint Paul.
Thanks again for your support and hope to see you on the 20th!
John Choi
