John Marty: Bringing Health Care to the Governor's Race

by: Grace Kelly

Mon Mar 02, 2009 at 16:21:29 PM CST

John Marty may have the key element to a successful race by championing the cause of providing health care. John Marty champions single payer health care which lowers health care costs by using a single insurance plan, run by the government. By using cross country comparisons, we know that private market health care insurance adds a roughly 50% burden to health care. Before the economy blew up, health care was listed as the second most important issue behind Iraq for Republicans, Democrats, and independents alike. Corporate media has mostly treated this issue as invisible. With the economy taking jobs, that means missing or very expensive health care coverage. With the economy needing more jobs, the high burden of health care insurance is huge discentive to add jobs.

In choosing a candidate, people look for representation on the issues, for trust and integrity to keep one's word, for the ability to do the job of governor well and for the ability to run a campaign well. John Marty is correct in saying that the values and issues that he has championed have now become popular, John Marty has a long record that demonstrates trust and integrity, with long experience in the legislative process, including oversight of the executive branch work. People who work with or for him, have spoken well of him as a leader. So the place where John Marty should be making his case is proving that he has the ability to run a campaign well.

"I have got the courage and the integrity to do what's right, to stand up for making sure that we get health care for everyone. even if the insurance industry fights it, even if the pharmaceutical industry says they are not going to accept it!

We need to look at what people need, what is important in people's lives:

good jobs, healthy communities, safe communities
a good health care system, a good education system, a clean environment!

Those are basic basic! essentials that everyone of us needs. And our kids are going to need them. And our grandkids are going to need them.

We can't have a governor who says. "Well. you know - we'd like do that, someday, we would like to give health care for everyone." We have to recognize the time is now! We have to fix the problems now! We don't need a tinkering governor, we need a Floyd B Olsen!

I want to provide that kind of leadership!"

Grace Kelly :: John Marty: Bringing Health Care to the Governor's Race

John Marty on the Issues

Three Main Goals

"The cause of more bankruptcies than everything else. We got to fix health care."

Summary of three most important goals: Providing health care, providing a sustainable economy that creates more jobs and providing a balanced budget through cost saving prevention and a better economy.

Healthcare

"You call 911. The police dispatcher picks up the phone, We don't hear 'Well, do you have police insurance? What coverage do you have? What's the plan? Does it cover burglary?' No, the police come out to your house and they deal with the problem. I want to make sure that we have health care the same way."

Summary: We can improve health care not by making insurance our focus, instead making health care our focus.  Other countries have done this for half the cost of what we are spending now.

Health Care and Business

"The only [health care] plan out there that would fix our problems!"

Summary: I am talking to businesses and to the Chambers of Commerce about health care. Businesses are impacted by the cost and the paperwork of health care insurance coverage, as well as having sicker employees. The plan I proposes helps business and costs them less.

Energy

"Clean coal is probably coal that is left in the ground."

Summary: We need to use cleaner technologies. We need kept Minneota jobs and Minnesota dollars here, through solar and wind technolgies.

More Jobs

"There is plenty of evidence that the governor's JOBZ program is basically tax cuts for certain select businesses. So if you're operating a small business  in Thief River Falls, and you're paying the regular tax rates that every business  is paying. And the governor's JOBZ program puts in one of your competitor across the street and gives him free taxes, gives him tax breaks. You have got to wonder, what is the business there thinking?"

Summary: To attract business, we need a well trained healthy workforce, with good infrastructure.

Fair Taxation

"When you throw in all the other taxes - the sales taxes. the excise taxes, everything else- people at the bottom end are paying alot more and middle class is the hardest hit. "

Summary: A fair tax budget does not soak the middle class. The Republican solution to cutting budgets cut the low cost prevention that later ends up costing our budget much more.

Environment

"As governor, I have the ability to pressure the legislature and stand up to the powerful interests that have been able to defeat environmental legislation!"

Summary: We have the greatest natural resources. Thirty years ago. we had leading environmental protection, that is not longer true. Senate author of cleaner automobile legislation.

Veterans

http://blip.tv/file/1829613/

"Politicians have promised veterans alot and not delivered."

Summary: Whereas President Bush cut Veteran's funding in half, the Democrats have been pushing hard for full funding at all government levels. It is matter of making the commitment in economic support.

John Marty on Running A Great Campaign

Campaign Success

"1994, that was the worst year for Democrats in thirty years."

Summary: The last run for governor was during the height of Gingrich era, when all Democrats were doing poorly. I now have 16 years more experience. The issues that I have championed have become more popular.

Public Financing of Elections

"Picture the next Vikings-Packers game. If you knew that the Packers coach is giving  thousand dollar gifts to the officials before the game, you would question it."

Summary:  I stopped taking any special interest money in 1990. It is important to take special interst money out of politics, replace it with small contributions and public financing. For 15 years, I have authoring legislation to do that.

The Surprise Question - Election Holiday

This was a surprise question,"Would you consider making the general election day a holiday?" Actually, due to technical difficulties, we had a chance to see the candidate also take on a number of false starts. Just like the video, shows, John Marty took on changes and surprises with charm and calm.

Summary: A holiday on election day might cause less voting, through more people being out of town, Voter turnout can be improved through allowing early voting and allowing vote registration at the same time as changing Driver's licenses. Instant runoff voting would also improve our elections.

Campaign Fund Raising

"The highest any candidate has spent in Minnesota ever, was what Pawlenty spent last time, which was just under four and half million dollars."

Summary: If voluntary limits are followed, then public financing is available, that has kept spending down. We can fund raise from grassroots, using the Obama approach, especially with more internet tools.

Negative Ads

"There is a difference between being aggressive in terms of issues, than making personal attacks, which seems to driving modern politics."

Summary: Always respond to negative ads. I have the facts on my side. Hit hard on issues not on personal attacks.

Motivation

"I want to see a governer who is going to bring that type of leadership and I don't see anyone else out there who will. That's why I'm running for governor."

Summary: As a state, we are tinkering with problems, not solving problems.

That Darn Arne.

Next.

We deserve better than Marty (0.00 / 0)
I just do not get it.  Why would the DFL look backwards for leadership when we have a great crop of new, inspiring and effective leaders in the likes of Thissen, Simon, Ness, etc?

There is nobody better than John Marty! (0.00 / 0)
There is nobody better than John Marty! Just look at the issues! It's not a matter of looking backwards, it's a matter of looking for bold, proven leadership. Over the last TWENTY PLUS years there simply has been NO stronger voice in MN on the progressive issues I care so much about than Senator John Marty. He's been dead right on Health Care, Education, the need for a fair tax structure, equality for ALL, jobs and wages, he was the ONLY Senator with the intelligence, vision and courage to vote AGAINST the 99 and 2000 tax cuts (the same cuts that have put us in the mess we are in now.) His health plan doesn't call for half-steps, or just covering some, it covers all-equally! John Marty is the only true progressive running as far as I'm concerned. He is the rightful leader of the new progressive movement in MN. You're right roughrider, there are some impressive new leaders emerging in the DFL (most of them AREN'T running for Governor, so it's a moot point.) They should watch and learn from Senator Marty! He stands up for what he believes in, and doesn't let politics get in the way! People are tired of the big money, soft on the issues candidates. We have plenty of them running for Governor! Those are the ones that are no longer "electable." Those days are over! People are sick of weak leaders! We need more people like John Marty!

Marty's campaign is already impressing people. He is becoming "electable" because people want that kind of courageous leadership! I think he's going to surprise A LOT of people by emerging from the pack. He has my full support, my donation, and he'll have my vote.

Uh, Wrong title? (0.00 / 0)
Perhaps instead you should have just called this the "I endorse John Marty" post? Good to know all of your posts looking at other candidates will be completely "fair and balanced" like this post was.

Chill (0.00 / 0)
John Marty running for governor is such a joke its not even worth getting upset about.

While we're at it, let me tell you about the man who can win... Mike Hatch! His loss last year, total fluke I tell you! This time he won't curse out a reporter, so he's got it in the bag!

OOOHH! (0.00 / 0)

Well, the fact that you're in a tizzie makes me think he's a good candidate.  Thanks!

A voice for progressives (0.00 / 0)
It's about time that we have a candidate with a track record of honesty and not bending to the political winds. Senator Marty was as progressive when it was unfashionable to be so as he is now. He is right on the issues and the other candidates do not measure up to him on that score.

The question for us is whether we will back the candidate that speaks to our issues or whether we will lapse into cynicism, as we did in the 80's and 90's. I think the public is now going our way and we need to catch up with them. Senator Marty is the one for that moment.

Seriously? (0.00 / 0)
Are there really people who think Marty is a serious candidate?

[ Parent ]
Marty has grown, and so have we (0.00 / 0)

John Marty has grown a lot over the years.

I believe the new federal civil union bill, if it passes, would change his situation as a candidate.

In other words, right now I read a lot of news about John Marty's stance on one issue (since that is what the big media focuses on... other issues aren't the focus).  But if that one issue were resolved in a bit of a compromise, and there was an end to some of the pain and suffering associated with the discrimination, John could/ would then go on to be seen by greater Minnesota as a viable candidate because the big media focus would then be on how he'd be able to help us.

Of course the Minnesota bill on Civil Unions would do much of the same for Marty.

I've been watching and listening about John Marty, and he's grown a lot since 1994.  So has Minnesota.
