"Today is a sad day for democracy. Earlier this afternoon, Republicans voted to turn our constitutional right to vote into a privilege. Minnesotans should be outraged.
Over the past few weeks, we've seen vocal opposition to photo ID. Minnesotans of all backgrounds rallied at our state's capitol, provided over four-and-a-half hours of testimony opposing photo ID, and spoke about how photo ID restricts their constitutional right to vote. Unfortunately, Republicans in Minnesota's legislature chose to do the bidding of the 1% who put them in office, not the 99% of us that only have one vote every election.
According to the Secretary of State's office, over 715,000 eligible Minnesota voters could be stripped of their constitutional right to vote. That many people would fill up Target Field about 18 times.
When it comes to civic participation, our nation has always moved in the director of greater inclusion. We need to keep that tradition going, and a photo ID amendment would do nothing but restrict Minnesotans' constitutional right to vote."
