There are no depths - none - to which contemporary conservative politicians won't eagerly try to dive. What Republican war on women? The Violence Against Women Act was reauthorized in 2005 by unanimous consent in the Senate and with 415 votes in favor in the House, and signed by George W. Bush. It's up for reauthorization again now, and of course, this time, Republicans have a problem with it. The bill-which is actually cosponsored by Idaho Republican Sen. Mike Crapo-received no Republican votes in the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Oh, they'll tell you they want to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act ... but of course, they want to do it their way. "The Republican opposition seems driven largely by an antigay, anti-immigrant agenda,"... A state legislator, in Oklahoma, highlighted the insanity of "personhood" legislation.Johnson writes that "the Personhood bill would potentially allow governmental intrusion into families' personal lives by policing what happens to a woman's eggs without any similar thought to what happens to a man's sperm." Her amendment reads:
"provided, however, any action in which a man ejaculates or otherwise deposits semen anywhere but in a woman's vagina shall be interpreted and construed as an action against an unborn child." (Minnesota has a proposed "fetal heartbeat" law, working its way to the floor. Perhaps, when it gets there, a righteous Minnesota legislator or two, could introduce an amendment or two. To the effect, perhaps, that a spermatozoa has all the rights of a sentient, independent human being, as soon as its ability to swim can be detected?) |
