Progressives For Ron Paul

I do not mind Ron Paul supporters. In fact, they can be some of the most consistent folks in the political discourse. My biggest problem is with Progressives for Paul. Not so much because they support Paul. He's not going anywhere. It's not worth persuading his supporters.

My biggest problem with Progressives for Paul is that their disappointment in Obama is going to aid in the election of a neo-con war monger who will destroy the environment and the middle class. Obama is a decent president who can be pushed to be better. Less imperialistic. Less corporate. Ron Paul is what he is. He will never back down from his anti-environmental, pro-corporate positions that are so destructive to all of us.

I read a great synopsis of the folly of the Progressive Committee to Elect Their Worst Nightmare. The article explains everything very concisely. For those who do not have time to read the article, I summed up the basic premise in the Venn Diagram below.

I'd think there was a little bit more of an overlap.... (0.00 / 0)
...but I could be wrong.

The thing I do like about Ron Paul and (most of) his supporters, is they really do seem to dislike dishonesty, graft, and corruption in politics/government.

Which, of course, makes them a poor fit in today's Greed Over Principles party....

"Those that forget the lessons of history, tend to vote GOP"

It's good to have them around (0.00 / 0)
It's good to have those around that are proud supporters of his more positive attributes. I just can't stand the ones who use Paul as some kind of Saint in order to demonize Obama. People who are Paul supporters because they are Paul supporters can be admirable.

People who are Paul supporters because they somehow think Obama personally let them down are immature and annoying.

Paul is certainly not a saint but he's been more prescient and James Madison-like on the most important issues of war and peace facing our country than the other politicians:  http://www.desmoinesregister.c...

War is important issue, environement is critical issue (0.00 / 0)
Paul would save the country at the expense of the earth. Not really liking that trade off. Polluters would love anyone but Obama. Climate instability means more war.

We have less war today than three years ago. Lets push Obama to be less imperialistic, and we get the bonus of protecting the earth as well.

Obama gets most $$ from Military-Industrial Complex (0.00 / 0)
Megan Carpentier at the Raw Story asks Which presidential candidates have earned the defense industry's support?

The answer:

President Obama is leading the pack in donations from the defense industry: according to the Center for Responsive Politics, he'd taken in almost $112,000 from defense industry donors through December 2011, despite not accepting any donations from super PACs or lobbyists. (Complete fourth quarter numbers were only released yesterday, so break-downs aren't yet available by industry.)

meh (0.00 / 0)
this says nothing about their actual policies. Are you really trying to convince us that Obama's defense policy will be dictated by $112K of contributions from the defense industry? In a campaign where he raised $42 MILLION last quarter alone?

Look, if war and isolationist foreign policy are critical enough issues for you that it makes you a single-issue voter, then I guess Ron Paul can work for you. (I can't de-link the two; maybe other people can, but since Paul's opposition to the wars is a product of his foreign policy stance I think they have to be linked. He's not against the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, etc. because he opposes war.) But let's keep in mind the other candidates out there.

Obama: ended the war in Iraq (over GOP objections), wants to reduce military spending, and submitted a plan to retire the 2-war doctrine that has dominated for over 30 years.

Romney: wants to spend more on the Pentagon, opposed the end of the Iraq war, other positions to change depending on who asks the question.

Gingrich: more military spending, opposed end of war in Iraq, wants to bomb Iran

Santorum: more military spending, opposed end of war in Iraq

The mainstream GOP position on war and military spending is: more more more.

Ron Paul's position on war is only acceptable if you also like his isolationist foreign policy. (I'm not a fan) And Ron Paul is only acceptable for progressives if his positions on war, free speech, and drugs are more important than his positions on taxes, the environment, choice, civil rights, immigration, etc.

I'm not a single-issue voter. Some are more important than others to me, but I'm not going to lend the sheen of progressive support to Ron Paul, whose positions as a whole are unacceptable to me for the leader of this country. Ron Paul is not a cafeteria menu: you cannot pick and choose the stuff you like and pretend the rest doesn't matter. And that's what seems to be happening.

But, when it comes to voting, when we only have two choices, you've got to grow up and realize there's a big difference between a disappointing friend and a deadly enemy   Bill Maher

Exactly (0.00 / 0)
I'll add, "A friend who has disappointed, but that I can push to do better" vs. "An enemy that will never waiver from his path."
