Tarryl Clark Nabs Major Union Endorsement

Earlier today, former State Senator Tarryl Clark announced the endorsement of the United Steelworkers District 11 in the MN-08 race.  Clark faces Rick Nolan, Daniel Fanning, and Jeff Anderson for the DFL nomination.  The winner of that race will then get the chance to take on Chip Cravaack in an effort to wrestle the Congressional seat back into Democratic hands.

With 12,500 active members and retirees in the 8th district, the USW endorsement is a major boost for Clark.  District 11 director Bob Bratulich had this to say, "Tarryl Clark is the strongest candidate in the race to beat Chip Cravaack.  Tarryl's years of service and commitment to the priorities of Minnesota families will guarantee that when she gets to Washington she will make sure we are no long focusing on tax cuts to millionaires and billionaires, but making sure that we are putting people back to work."

The USW endorsement means access to field workers ready to knock on doors, convenient meeting locations, rebar for signs, and many other amenities that can help Clark's campaign in a race that is almost certainly (read: definitely) headed for a primary.  What's more, the labor endorsement could act as Clark's olive branch to Duluth and the Iron Range--areas typically hesitant to support anyone they perceive as an outsider.

The USW endorsement comes on the heels of Senator Clark announcing that she outraised Chip Craavack last quarter.

For Jeff, specifically.  He used to boast the only union endorsement.  Now he has no money, the lesser union endorsement and seems only to be capable of producing the most ridiculous, bush league web videos.  I had such hopes.  Tarryl's got money, political influence, and actual union support.  Nolan...fanning...anyone...anyone...jeff...nevermind...  Tarryl Clark's got this thing sewn up.

way too early to say Tarryl's got this sewn up. Let's see where the other unions come down on this and see whether the District 11 USW endorsement translates into anything other than a leadership hat-tip. This endorsement was kinda pre-ordained anyways with Tarryl's position with the Blue-Green Alliance. Don't get me wrong, it's still a nice get for her, but it would have been a much bigger story if she HADN'T gotten it.

It will be interesting to see if this translates into delegate support for Tarryl at the endorsement, or if she'll still be focused on a primary strategy. And if she's not endorsed...will the USW support hold?

But no one has this sewn up in Nov. Candidates don't win anything a full year out.

Tarryl definitely has money. Political influence? Doesn't seem to have a lot of it up in CD8, but I could be wrong. Most of the political movers seem to be flowing towards Nolan and somewhat towards Anderson so far. Fanning hasn't been in long enough to really see what support he has yet. Tarryl's big draw so far has been money. It will be interesting to see if the USW endorsement translates to additional support in other areas.

A Leadership Hat tip. (0.00 / 0)
I agree with you JML. It's way too early.  And as for the District 11 endorsement, meh. It's the USW Locals that count. With all due respect to Bob Bratulich, he didn't ask me and I pay dues to the USW.
I don't agree with his statement about her having the best chance of beating Chipper. How could he not hear the "carpetbagger" comments being spoken by the membership he is representing. Electability is a HUGE consideration here, and this issue of residency is NOT going to disappear because Mr Bratulich has spoken.
Again, it's the Local endorsments that count. And to all of my Brothers and Sisters, get to your meetings and voice your opinions. Bob Bratulich IS our District Director, but WE are the Union, and I think he needs to be reminded of that fact.
